The Houston Texans, who have won two in a row, were off on Sunday and won't play again until Oct. 20 at Seattle.
And while it's still relatively early in the 17-game season and perhaps too soon to start looking at the postseason chase, the rest of the AFC South was in action as well as other key teams around the conference. How those results will impact the Texans the rest of the season:
AFC South
The Texans have won the division two seasons in a row, but so far the competion looks tougher.
Standings
Indianapolis: 5-1
Jacksonville: 4-2
Texans: 2-3
Tennessee: 1-5
Indianapolis 31, Arizona 27
Indianapolis (5-1) is alone in first in the division after surving a scare from Arizona. The Texans still play the Colts twice - Nov. 30 at Indianapolis and the last week of the season in Houston on either Jan. 3 or 4.
Seattle 20, Jacksonville 12
The good news is Jacksonville lost. The bad news, Seattle is up next for the Texans and may be a more formidable opponent.
The Texans, who lost in Jacksonville earlier, host the Jaguars on Nov. 9, and will need a win to split the head-to-head. Division record is still most important and Jaguars are 1-0 while Texans are 1-1.
Las Vegas 20, Tennessee 10
The Titans are pretty much toast at 1-5 and 0-2 in the division but the Raiders are on the fringe of the wild card at 2-4.
AFC wild card
The next three teams after the four division winners earn spots.
Standings
5. Jacksonville: 4-2
6. Denver: 4-2
7. New England: 4-2
8. Kansas City: 3-3
9. Houston: 2-3
10. Cincinnati: 2-4
11. Las Vegas -24
LA Chargers 29, Miami 27
Cameron Dicker, or "Dicker the Kicker" as he's known in these parts, gave the Chargers the win with nine seconds left. That leaves LA tied with Denver at 4-2 (with the tiebreaker) atop the AFC West. Either the Broncos or the Chargers are likely in the wild-card race with Houston. The Texans face the Chargers the weekend of Dec. 27-28 in Los Angeles. Miami is about done at 1-5.
Denver 13, NY Jets 11
The Broncos are the surpise team of the AFC West and are tied for the division at 4-2. The Broncos come to Houston on Nov. 2 and if they don't remain atop the division will be a wild-card contender. Head-to-head is often the first tiebreaker if the Texans and Broncos were to tie for a postseason spot. No need to worry about the Jets at 0-6.
New England 25, New Orleans 19
The Patriots are a surprise team so far and at 4-2 after beating the Saints will be a team to watch. Houston doesn't face New England this year. Conference record will be a key tiebreaker and Patriots are 2-2 and Texans 2-1 with a long way to go.
Pittsburgh 23, Cleveland 9
The Steelers (4-1) sure look like the AFC North champions so not too much to worry about yet for the Texans for possible wild-card ties with Pittsburgh. The Browns at 1-5 are pretty much done.
LA Rams 17, Baltimore 3
The Ravens might eventually be the Baltimore team of old but after falling to the Rams they are 1-5 and have already lost to the Texans. Advantage Houston in any potential tie.
Green Bay 27, Cincinnati 18
Cincinnati was a preseason playoff favorite but Joe Burrows' toe injury has slowed the Bengals, who at 2-4 still only have one loss in the conference.
Kansas City 30, Detroit 17
The Chiefs weren't going to go 2-4 were they? Nope. The Chiefs beat Detroit to show they aren't going anywhere. And like the Broncos or Chargers, if they don't take the AFC West, are expected to be in wild-card contention. The defending AFC champs host the Texans on Dec. 7 on Sunday Night Football. Another key game for Houston for potential tiebreakers.
Buffalo vs. Atlanta
The Bills (4-1) are favorites in the AFC East so may not be a factor in the wild-card. They also come to Houston on Nov. 20 for a Thursday primetime game. The benefits of Houston playing a first-place schedule. Buffalo is at the Falcons on Monday.
