But he skipped preseason and practices to be ready for the regular season

ML gave him a veterans pass
And yet, we needed him to be good. ML, I think, gave him a vets pass so he didn't flat out demand a trade. Can't say I necessarily agree with him getting all the leeway at this point.

Similar to trading MHJ, I don't see any real value in trading MHJ or Sweat or any key player who is under contract for the next few years just to give Monti more draft picks to waste. Just like I don't trust him to sign any sort of impact player in FA because he hasn't really shown he can. The one exception might be Mack Wilson. Maybe Fro. But neither of them are considered great players league wide.

Thought this was the most telling quote today. Brissett on whether the Cards need to get Marv the ball early to get him in a rhythm:“Uh, that's so hard to say. It's more so, I just want to play good football. … The ball's gonna go where the ball's gonna

Yeah, throwing to Marv does lower the completion percentage.

He didn't get a "veteran's pass". After being silent about it all summer, LaFleur last week said that Sweat had a mysterious "procedure" from which he was recovering.

Whatever claim Monti had on remaining as GM rested on two key offseason decisions:

1. Retaining Nick Rallis as DC
2. Supplementing the defense with role players rather than a bigger move

The above relied on the belief younger players developing and injured players returning in the same system would produce a functional defense

I also believe that Mike influenced both decisions above with budget constraints

FWIW, Monti was telling everyone who would listen this offseason that they wanted to increase the talent on defense with both draft picks and free agency, but they couldn’t close the deal on either side.

This is via TAFS.

I think some of that is Bidwill budget constraints and a lot of it is Monti being unable to sell the program or successfully navigate the draft.

Yep. Monti, Rallis, Billy Boy, really earned a zero for this offseason. Not having the QBOF doesn't count against them (just this offseason and NOT talking long-term mistakes), but the defense? Oh, they all fail on the defense.
Our only other option at S yesterday, besides Budda and Dewey, was Wydett Williams an UDFA rookie. Yes, Rabbit and Kitan Crawford are both hurt, but this is a clear example of how piss poor our depth is.

Maybe a controversial take. I feel like this team has pretty much met my preseason expectations. The offense for two of the three games has been kinda entertaining, and the defense for two of three games has been hot garbage. The Cardinals are 1-2 when I thought they would be 0-3. I guess I am a light sider right now.

EDIT With all of the limitations at QB. the roster as a whole, and the questionable individuals the franchise chose to retain, I actually think things are a bit better than expectation.

Year 4 of the rebuild and our trenches are crap. The Sf ragtag DL destroyed our starting unit. Our D line couldn't do anything even with their starting LT going down and knowing they had to run out clock.

We are back to only drafting OL/DL and somehow getting the top QB as well.

Trade Budda, trade Sweat

Joey Blount is also on IR. Three of six safeties are hurt. It is the Cardinal way.
