Torey Lovullo did not offer any clarity on Ryne Nelson's role moving forward in his pregame presser, but he did say that optioning Nelson to Triple-A was never a consideration.

Nelson is staying in the big leagues.

Nelson has to stay in the rotation. Either go with a 6 man rotation or put whoever is the odd man in a long relief role.

I'd sit Montgomery or move him to long relief. Two more starts and he gets another $2.5 million next year.

We feel deep on starters for 2025. Everyone should be back, plus some some young arms will be ready too.

My rotation:
Zac Gallen - Control through 2025
Eduardo Rodriguez - Signed through 2028
Brandon Pfaadt - Under control for several years
Merrill Kelly - Club Option ($7 million)
Ryne Nelson - Under control for several years

Removed from rotation:
Jordan Montgomery - Player Option 2025 ($20 million)

Coming Up, could be ready in 2025:
Yilber Diaz - Under control for several years
Yu-Min Lin - Under control for several years

Coming back from injury. Move to bullpen next year and give a shot at closing in 2025:
Drey Jamison - Under control for several years

I just want to remind people when they were calling Pfaadt Fart or Pfffdt that talent usually wins out.

Pfaadt is our Ace in two years

He will be the best pitcher in MLB, when he learns to not have "that one inning". His stuff is the most Greg Maddux like, since Greg Maddux, when it comes to movement and pinpoint placement. Brandon has more velocity he can rely on, than Greg did. It took Maddux until about his 3rd season to start being totally dominant and I expect the same from Pfaadt.

Last 34 games (including playoffs):
Zac Gallen:185.2 IP, 4.22 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9, 8.1 K/9
Brandon Pfaadt:191.2 IP, 3.94 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 1.8 BB/9, 9.0 K/9
I think Gallen is just about on par with Pfaadt - talent wise. But for some reason, Zac’s been struggling mightily and I think it’s almost entirely about his mental approach.
Physically… velocity… ball movement… pitch arsenal… It’s all still there. But there is something way off in that 6-inch space between his ears.

Yes, it was just his second start back from injury yesterday, but #Dbacks

RHP Merrill Kelly's fastball avg. ~89.5 mph (about 2 mph off the norm).Kelly allowed 8 H & 6 ER yesterday. That's just the 3rd start he's allowed 8+ H & 6+ ER since the '22 season (a span of 37 starts).

As for the rotation,
@Dbacks
manager Torey Lovullo said no decisions have been made. As of right now they still have 6 starters. Says they hope to reach a decision soon. They are looking at upcoming matchups when deciding.

With Jordan sent to the bullpen it looks like he will exercise his option and milk us for 25 million next year. His stock has fallen off a cliff.

Ryne Nelson had a 7.06 ERA in his 1st 7 2024 startsSince then, Nelson is 7-3 with a 3.50 ERA over his last 100.2 IP & 15 starts (17 appearances) A consistent piece to the Dbacks rotationArizona should continue to tell him his rotation spot is on the line for motivation lol

He's at $22.5 million next season. He'd need to made 4 more starts to hit $25 million. Two less and he would have been at $20 million. He's made 19 starts. But yeah, he's definitely picking his option up.

The D-backs and left-hander Jordan Montgomery have agreed to a contract, reports ESPN. It's a one-year deal worth $25 million, according to the Arizona Republic, and Montgomery gains a $20 million player option with 10 starts. The 2025 salary rises to $22.5 million with 18 starts and $25 million with 23 starts.
