Christian Kirk won't be getting in on the action Monday night at Lumen Field when the Houston Texans take on the Seattle Seahawks.
The veteran receiver was ruled out for Monday night due to a hamstring injury on the team’s official injury report. No other active Houston players enter the game with injury designations, meaning he'll be the only player out because of injury.
Kirk, who missed the first two games of the season with the same injury, seemed fine as the team returned from its bye. He practiced full on Thursday afternoon, but then later appeared to bealing with the injury at some point on Friday.
The injury then kept him out of Saturday’s final walkthrough before the team departed for the airport and the long plane ride over to Seattle. It's unclear if Kirk made the trip to the Pacific Northwest, but the Texans won't use him when they take the field against a surging Seahawks roster looking to gain ground in the NFC West.
Traded for this offseason from Jacksonville, Kirk was coming off a season-high four catches for 64 yards in Houston’s 44-10 beatdown of the Baltimore Ravens. This season, he's totaled 10 catches for 109 yards and no touchdowns in three games. No, those numbers aren't insane, but his value has come by taking the attention toward the middle of the field, thus opening opportunites on the outside for Pro Bowler Nico Collins.
With Kirk unable to play, Houston will likely turn to rookie Jaylin Noel in the slot and third-year pass-catcher Xavier Hutchinson on the outside. Both are coming off a career day against Baltimore, where Hutchinson caught his first two NFL touchdowns against the Ravens.
Meanwhile Noel joined him with his inaugural score during the fourth quarter.
Kirk’s absence could also pave the way for All-Pro punt returner Braxton Berrios to make his Texans debut. Much like Kirk, Berrios missed the first two games with a hamstring injury before recovering, but had been a healthy scratch with Noel handling kick and punt return duties.
Kickoff from Lumen Field is scheduled for 9 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on ABC.
