The Jacksonville Jaguars have their first preseason game on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and with that, the team has released its first unofficial depth chart.
Now, of note, when it comes to unofficial depth charts, especially in the preseason, take it all with a grain of salt. While there may be a few noteworthy items, this isn't the be-all, end-all by any means when it comes to where things stand.
Below is the Jaguars' unofficial depth chart on both offense and defense, along with a few quick thoughts.
- The offensive line mostly shakes out as expected. However, at right guard, Chuma Edoga appears to be pushing Patrick Mekari for that starting job. While Mekari was sidelined with an injury, Edoga started at right guard and performed well while there, according to John Shipley.
- Liam Coen spoke highly of the improved consistency he's seen from Anton Harrison in training camp, and him being the sole starting right tackle reflects that.
- Josh Cephus and Trenton Irwin, being the fifth and sixth wide receivers, confirms what we expected up to this point.
- The TE2 battle behind Strange is up for grabs, with it being listed as Mundt or Long. This will be a blocking-heavy role.
- Etienne and Bigsby both being the top running back options checks out as well. Based on reports out of training camp, those two have done the most work with the first team offense. My guess is "RB1" could vary week to week depending on what the game plan calls for. We will see a lot of Etienne in space and in the passing game, while Bigsby is the more power runner.
- At linebacker, at least based on the depth chart, Kiser is pushing Muma for one of the backup roles. With both being core special teams players, there might not be room on the roster for each of them.
- Gardeck and Abdullah are competing for the third linebacker role in Anthony Campanile's base 4-3 defense.
- Hunter and Jarrian Jones are competing for the spot opposite of Campbell, at least until Brown returns. Prior to Brown's injury, he was getting a lot of first-team snaps. Jones has also acclimated himself well to Campanile's zone-heavy defense since training camp began.
- Wingard, Savage, and Johnson are all competing for that one starting safety spot, but Wingard appears to have the upper hand in that positional battle.
