The Indianapolis Colts have their first preseason game on Thursday against the Baltimore Ravens, and with that, the team has released its first unofficial depth chart.
Now, of note, when it comes to unofficial depth charts, especially in the preseason, take it all with a grain of salt. While there may be a few noteworthy items, this isn't the be-all, end-all by any means when it comes to where things stand.
Below is the Colts' unofficial depth chart on both offense and defense, along with a few quick thoughts.
- Freeland is listed as the team's backup left tackle and Travis the backup right tackle, however, both are competing for the swing tackle role off the bench. Based on Travis getting the first team reps earlier in camp when Smith had a vet rest day, it seems like he may have the upper hand in that competition early on.
- Shane Steichen said on Sunday that both Richardson and Jones would play on Thursday. Whoever doesn't start in Week 1 of the preseason will then start in Week 2 against Green Bay.
- Salvon Ahmed suffered a "severe leg injury," said Steichen, and he won't be playing.
- Will Mallory is listed as TE4 ahead of Jelani Woods. Based on how camp has unfolded, that isn't a surprise. Mallory and Woods are competing for the receiving-first role at the tight end position. Also, and no surprise, but Warren is TE1.
- Bortolini and Pinter are competing for the starting center job. Of note, it doesn't say Bortolini or Pinter. Instead, Bortolini is listed as the sole starter.
- Goodson is listed as RB2, but he is competing for that role with Giddens and Herbert. From the sounds of it, Giddens has been playing very well as of late.
- Tim Smith is behind Eric Johnson as the backup nose tackle. Perhaps in the earlier stages, Johnson gets the nod on the depth chart because of his experience.
- Cameron McGrone is ahead of Jaylon Carlies. While Franklin has been out, McGrone has seen a lot of reps with the first team. Carlies is also playing catch-up a bit after missing offseason programs due to shoulder surgery.
- Justin Walley is listed as a starter. In part, Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents are sidelined at the moment with hamstring injuries, but Walley has also played very well in camp.
- Shrader has the upper hand in the kicker battle, having made more of his attempts up to this point.
- Gould has also steadily been the go-to return man in practices.
