Suggs had only 19 reps of 225, Watch this guys stock drop big time, because of his size and lack of strength. I bet the Cards could trade down a little and still land Suggs

Kiper on Suggs' workout (from ESPN Insider)

Suggs still solid
despite subpar showing

Thursday, March 27 Updated 11:46 AM EST

Terrell Suggs probably won't be challenging Carson Palmer to be the No. 1 overall pick after his workout, but he still projects into the top six selections.
A 4.78 on turf isn't a truly bad time, and Suggs will be working out again in two weeks with another chance to impress the scouts. He will probably improve on his time, and it's not like he ran above 4.90.

Some guys are just not able to turn it on in workouts. Don't forget, Jerry Rice only ran 4.58 coming out of Mississippi Valley State in 1985 and his speed was considered a question mark. Some run fast and play slow, while others run slow and play fast. What matters is what happens between the lines.

And Suggs' other numbers were good. He bench-pressed 225 pounds 19 times and had a 33½-inch vertical jump.

The important thing to stress is that Terrell Suggs is a good football player. He came to Arizona State as a tailback, broke the NCAA single-season sack record with 24 last year, and has natural pass-rush ability that speaks for itself. Just go back and look at the film.

Some players are just workout warriors, and that can be deceiving. Aundray Bruce of Auburn, for example, was the No. 1 overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons in 1988 based on his workout, selected ahead of players like Neil Smith, Tim Brown, Sterling Sharpe and Michael Irvin.

The same goes for Mike Mamula of Boston College in 1995, who was a true workout warrior and became the seventh overall pick ahead of guys like Warren Sapp, Hugh Douglas and Ty Law. His showing pushed him ahead of some great players, but he has done virtually nothing at the pro level.

What it boils down to is that while Suggs wasn't able to turn it up in his first individual workout, he can turn it on with the pads on. He may have been nervous or he may not have been feeling his best, but he has another chance and there is no question about his football skills.

Suggs won't be all the rage on draft day and the talk will die down about Cincinnati or Houston taking him in the top two, but he will be there at No. 4 for Chicago and could be around for Arizona at No. 6.

That is right where I projected him in my first two mock drafts. No one will be scrambling to trade up for Suggs, but he didn't hurt himself significantly, either.

19 reps is very bad for a lineman, add in the factor of questions about Suggs size and he didn't have a great 40 time will really hurt Suggs. Remember Kenyetta Walker's slide out of 10, with his lack of bench reps. I hear on the radio link this morning as well that Cincy and Houston will not select him with 1 or 2, and that Chicago was very vocal about his bad performance as well. They also said Dallas is not showing much interest in Suggs as well. I believe Suggs will be a 6-12th pick and will not be a top fiver, so all the nonsense about trading up for Suggs won't happen. I think the Cards could trade back a few spots and still land there guy.

Kiper's take on the situation is his usual, if it goes against his mock draft, he doesn't believe it. Kiper sucks year in and year out.

Sorry Devon but I believe Henderson and one of the other DTs taken early last year had 20 or less reps and it didnt really hurt there draft stock. The one that went to the Titans slipped a little because of attitude not # of reps! Damn Im drawing a blank on names UGGHHHH!

Sorry but bottom line is combine workouts dont mean squat or equate to play on the football field!

your talking about Haynesworth from the Titans.

I agree about Combine #'s dont mean crap, but they do affect the draft big time, look at Stallworth last year. Look at what happened to Kalimba Edwards last year, remember we had him hyped to be our 12th and he dropped to the early 2nd round and had guys like Charles Grant that had better size and combine #'s go ahead of him, despite Edwards having better production.

That may be possible that he COULD slip a tad. But I would not be willing to take that risk when hes sitting there at #6 since he is the most talented DL in the draft and he fits our biggest need.

Why risk it scoop him up there and walk away smiling!

I would've expected that they've backed out, because of his "slow" 40, since they'll use him as a OLB in their 3-4.

Anyway, I don't think 19 reps is bad. Yes, it's below average, which is about 24 (http://www.theredzone.org/2003/draft/combine/DE.asp), but Suggs is a pass-rushing DE, so you would expect him to bea little lighter and weaker.

Suggs is one guy we cannot let slip through our fingers. His size and agility can & will intimidate opponents. He is a must at # 6.

Excellent point - you can get away with slower straight ahead speed at DE than you can playing outside LB where you have to cover TE's and RB's out of the backfield.

Actually Kalimba was not very productive his senior season. Everyone was excited about him over his potential. I watched him his entire career at Univ. of South Carolina, and he was actually really hurt by the system they ran (a 3-3-5).

So how much will his disastrous performance in Wednesday's on-campus workout hurt Arizona State defensive end Terrell Suggs? Hard to say. But it's fair to point out that several teams were flabbergasted at how poorly he ran and, even more so, how his nervousness transformed into high anxiety. Suggs was certainly sluggish, failing to get into the coveted 4.6-range other defensive ends have posted in their workouts, and didn't appear very strong. "No excuse," said one personnel director who attended the workout. "He looked like a guy who didn't take this seriously." That said, even if Suggs had collected those 24 sacks he registered in 2002 lining up against a mannequin, it would be enough to tempt teams to scrutinize him closely on videotape. It is certainly likely that Suggs cost himself some money, and fell several spots in the first round, but he is probably still a top 10 selection. And maybe even top six, since the sack-challenged Arizona Cardinals (just 65 sacks combined in the past three seasons) would have to consider Suggs if he dropped to their spot in the round. And there is this: ESPN.com has learned that Houston officials, who were serious about Suggs as a potential candidate for their No. 3 slot overall, lunched with the Sun Devils star on Thursday afternoon. Look for Texans general manager Charley Casserly and coach Dom Capers to get an individual look at Suggs in drills sometime in the next two weeks. Fact is, Suggs is thinking about running again for any team that wants to see him, probably in a couple weeks.
