New England Patriots wideout Stefon Diggs is adjusting to seeing his snap count decrease in recent weeks.
That has led to a steep drop-off in production from the four-time Pro Bowler, who still leads the Patriots in receiving yards. Diggs has only eight receptions for 72 yards in his last three games combined. Those numbers followed his last great showing against the New York Jets, when he racked up nine receptions for 105 yards.
He was in on a season-low 26 offensive snaps against the Bills last week. That's a surprise considering how well he played against his former team earlier in the season when he went off for 10 catches for 146 yards. It's also worth noting that he played in under 50 percent of the snaps against the New York Giants and Cincinnati Bengals.
“Just trying to get used to it. It was kind of the same in the beginning of the year, too,” Diggs said, via MassLive's Mark Daniels. “I just try to take advantage of the opportunities I do get and when I am out there, be a vessel, be a positive force rather than being any other way. I’m adjusting to it. I just try to do what I’m asked and handle it the best way I can.
“I always want to be out there. I want to make plays, and I want to play at a high level. We have a lot of skill guys. We’ve got a lot of amazing players. I’m just doing what I can.”
There is no definitive answer as to why Diggs' snap count is going down. Hopefully, this isn't a trend that carries over into the playoffs.
Diggs is as close to a No. 1 receiving target as the Patriots currently have on their roster, and they'll need a big showing from him if they hope to make a deep postseason run.
