It was good to see the D-backs get a run in each of the first 3 innings.

We lead 3-1 in the bottom of the 5th. A good start for Andriese.

Well, we've now seen the Automatic Runner. Designed to be used in extra innings, but with the score tied at 3 at the end of 8, they had San Diego put a runner on 2B to start the 9th in this game.

The Managers agreed to do it in the 9th to try to avoid extra innings.

The runner was the batting position which made the last out the previous inning. And the Padres drove him home to take the lead. And had three walks as well. For those of you keeping score, you put "E" (for error), but not charge the team or a player with an error.

As we go to the bottom of the 9th, the D-backs start out with a runner on 2B -- the defensive replacement for the outfielder who made the last out in the 8th.

So the D-backs are down by 1 in the bottom of the 9th with the Automatic Runner on 2B.

And the D-backs lose 4-3 under the Ghost Runner rule.

I believe the Padres batted out of order in the 9th (possibly even twice), but the umps looked the other way.

But the NL won't go to the Designated Hitter rule. Harumph!
