Southampton are expecting their FA Cup clash against Shrewsbury Town to be the first third-round tie called off after a coronavirus outbreak among their opponents. As many as 10 members of the English Football League side’s squad were reportedly found to have the virus following testing on Tuesday ahead of Saturday night’s game. Town already had two positive cases, which forced off their League One game against Crewe Alexandra, with Marc Pugh since confirming he was one of them. Most, if not all, of those found to have the virus on Tuesday were said to be asymptomatic but must now self-isolate. Southampton were expecting a decision on the tie from the Football Association on Wednesday afternoon. They could be awarded a walkover if their opponents are unable to play the game, which was scheduled to be televised by BT Sport, although Telegraph Sport has been told the Premier League side would be willing to accept a postponement provided a date could be found. Shrewsbury said in a statement: “Shrewsbury Town Football Club can confirm several members of the Town squad and first team staff have tested positive for Covid-19. “In accordance with EFL and government guidelines, all concerned individuals will now enter into a period of self-isolation. The health and safety of all staff members at Shrewsbury Town Football Club remains paramount and the club continually takes all necessary steps to protect all where possible. “The club have informed Shropshire Public Health, EFL, and the FA of the current situation and we will continue discussions with the relevant football authorities. “The club will be making no further comment at this time and ask that each individual involved has their privacy respected. Necessary updates will be provided in due course.” Tuesday’s tests were among mandatory Covid-19 checks being carried out at lower-league clubs playing in the FA Cup. Wayne Rooney is set to miss Derby’s FA Cup tie against Chorley this weekend, with the match expected to go ahead despite the club’s coronavirus outbreak. Rooney, the interim manager, and Derby’s first team will not be present for the third-round tie against the non-league club after over seven members of staff and players tested positive for Covid-19.
