Just another in a long line of players across various Arizona sports who have been elevated to Mount Rushmore status by ASFN only to find it was an illusion.

Justin Upton on the D-backs comes to mind. Too much, too soon with that UPTOwN stuff in RF. Instant gratification.

He might have become a superstar if he weren't forced to carry the team before he was ready.

If only they had let him be the best player in the family. :)

I don't get the obsession with getting a "Face of the Franchise". Best player to wear a Dbacks Uni (RJ) let his pitches do the talking. Gonzo didn't crow too much either.

Remember the Eric Byrnes Experience? What a disaster. Overpaid him because the FO thought he would bring fans in to watch him play.

And, no matter how old he got, he was extremely immature. Like Pete Rose and Mark Grace.

'Sorry, but I don't understand that at all. I was reacting to Dback Jon's reference to Eric Byrnes.

    Gonzo was certainly not immature.

We know that Archie needs to be sent down to try to upgrade his pitch selection. Right now, he is a one trick pony, with only a fast ball with no movement.

Here is the WHIP for all the pitchers. Walks & hits, which is a good indication of their effectiveness for all of the innings they have pitched.

If you discount the 2 at the top who have less than three innings pitched between them, those who have started the most games rank 1st, 4th, 8th, 11th & 15th,
starting with Greinke. The newbie starters, Clarke and Duplantier, rank 5th & 6th. Luckily Lopez and Holland, now our only two dependable closers, rank 2nd & 3rd.
So we are finally headed in the right direction.

The list should be a clear guide to Torey and Butcher as to who is helping the team and who is not. Mike Butcher, among others, has not. :(

Notice the WHIP offenders at the bottom -- Hirano, Koch, Sherfy (surprisingly with his 0.93 ERA), Godley and, at the very bottom, Bradley.

And Lopez is sitting there right near the top...in almost every statistical category...and yet he was left on the bench last night with a one-run lead in the 8th. WTF?

In the interim, I had revised my post to show how high Lopez (and Holland) rank.

And to highlight more rankings and eliminate the top 2, with less than 3 innings
    between them.

Please take a look at my revised, extended recap.

    Thanks.

Shave the beard and start over! Show the fans that you care about winning and not image and proper nail care. No chance he does it but this would change my perspective of him (at least at first)

I am sure that Archie cares about winning. But you're right about image. By default,
he became the face of the organization due to his personality and, yes, his beard.
At the least, I think he should trim it to medium level and take attention off himself.

The question is . . . does Archie have (or can he develop) two Major League pitches
to go with his fast, but too straight and predictable (as far as location), fast ball?

It is not a given! It is possible that is all he has. If he is eligible to go down to the
Minors to redefine himself, he should. It is too much to expect him to change at
    the Major League level.

Of course, ASFN needs to remove his photo from the Legends at the top of our
screen. That might take some pressure off him. Yeah, that's the ticket.

I am with you on everything you just stated. Just having a 95 mph fastball isn’t gonna cut it in the mlb these days. It may if one can locate it on every pitch or has Mo Rivera movement. A few outings in AA or AAA would most definitely help him get on track, but is he willing to do that?? Is it’s in his contract that he cannot be sent to minors?

I like Archie and hope he figures it out. But right now, he has no confidence nor does anyone else.

With all due respect, Iceman, I wouldn't say 'most definitely' at this point.

It would remain to be seen if he can, in fact, develop a Major League curve ball and changeup.

There have been thousands of good pitchers who are not Major League level.
