Before the Colorado duo of Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders step on an NFL football field, the two are getting their number retired by the program.
No other Colorado player will wear Hunter's No. 12 and Sanders' No. 2 in the immediate future. The jerseys will be retired at CU's annual "Black and Gold" spring game on Saturday.
The duo helped transform Colorado into a nationally recognized program under head coach Deion Sanders. In 2024, Hunter won the program's second Heisman Trophy for his two-way play. Hunter tallied 11 pass deflections, three interceptions, 96 receptions, 1,258 yards, and 15 touchdowns.
The Heisman wasn't Hunter's only award last season, either. He earned the Bednarik Award and Lott IMPACT Trophy on defense, while on offense, he won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's best receiver.
While Sanders didn't have a Heisman season, he still brought a lot to the program. He won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award for best senior quarterback with his 4,134-yard and 37-touchdown season.
The jersey retirement has sparked debate, with Buffs fans everywhere commenting on social media. Most fans think Hunter deserves the honor, but not so much for Sanders. Some also believe the timing is rushed, and there should have been a down period for each player's legacy to be established.

No. 2 and No. 12 untouchable
Awesome: Colorado Football is retiring Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter jersey numbers:

Coach Chev thinks more players should receive the honor?
Saw the news today that Colorado was retiring #2 Shedeur Sanders and #12 Travis Hunter. Retiring numbers is a huge honor and something that should never be taken lightly. I believe strongly that there should be a cooling off period, the same as with the Hall of Fame in the NFL,…

Hunter sure. Shedeur?
Travis Hunter definitely deserves to have his jersey retired at Colorado. Generational talent. Heisman winner. No brainer.
As for Shedeur? Even if he’s equally a face of CU’s revival & their most talented QB ever, retiring his # before Kordell Stewart’s just doesn’t seem right.

A lot of history with No. 2 and No. 12
There’s also been a lot of all-conference (at least) players that have worn No. 12 at Colorado:
Woody Shelton
Frank Rogers
Mike Bynum
John Stearns
David Williams
Jeff Knapple
Dave McCloughan
Lamont Warren
Steven Montez

Turned around the program
Travis and Shedeur should have their jerseys retired.
They changed the whole program. Isn’t that the point of “jersey retirement?”

Are jersey retirements out of control?
Jersey retirements are out of control. Not even a shot at these two.
There is almost nobody that deserves a jersey retirement this should be extremely rare.
Ring of honor....fine
But not jersey retirements https://t.co/NTRQQu2GwN

Nothing noteworthy?
Travis Hunter I get the guy won a Heisman but Shedeur? What did Shedeur do to deserve a jersey retirement? He was there for two years he didn’t win a bowl game or a conference title or do anything noteworthy. https://t.co/3dNtpiS08U

Is changing the program's fortune not enough?
Can someone kindly explain to me exactly what Shedeur did to get his number retired? https://t.co/ae7mX7UUKb
