Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone cut a dejected figure as he spoke to the media after a 2-1 home loss to Bødo/Glimt in the last game of the Champions League’s league phase.

“We gave it our all, I can’t ask any more of the players, because they work hard, they try, but we can’t be decisive in front of goal,” Simeone said. “I hope that these situations pass, like the other day (against Mallorca) with the own goal in our favour, but there’s not much else we can do.”

Diego Simeone on missed chances

“Firstly, congratulations to the opposition, they did a very good job. We knew about their transitions and their excellent defending. I think that despite their efforts, we could have scored more goals in the first half due to the chances we created, but we weren’t clinical enough. In the second half, there was that play where there were several rebounds, and Almada hit one on the line. We found ourselves in a match where we deserved to be ahead, but we were behind. We worked in different ways to try to score, congratulate our opponents and prepare for Saturday (at Levante), which is only a few hours away.”

Simeone on the fans whistling at Pablo Barrios’ substitution

“The fans always have the opportunity to express how they feel, and we are working to give our best for the team and for the club. (The boos) are understandable.”

Simeone on fixing struggles in front of goal

“The only solution is to continue creating chances, to give the team confidence, for our fans to continue supporting the team as always to give their all, and there is no other way. The path we are on is a good one, and we must maintain it and stand firm in what lies ahead because there are many important things to come.”

Simeone on no strikers on the bench

“We are working on what we can bring in. Let’s hope that it won’t be long now. We can’t say much more and have to wait to see if something happens or not.”

Simeone on the last two Champions League games

“Honestly, I was more disappointed with the last game against Galatasaray. We deserved to win, we did everything we needed to do, and that’s why I was disappointed. Not today. We played three days ago, we responded well in every way, and I have nothing to reproach the team for. Everyone is giving their all, and with this drive, humility, and confidence in what we do, I have no doubt that we will get the results we want and need.”

Simeone on the result

“As we had discussed, we wanted a big win, but they are a team with very good transitions, as they demonstrated. The first half was very good, we could have scored a few more goals than we did. After the equaliser, we were gripped by the desire to find the advantage that never came. A favourable play came their way, a rebound, a rebound, Almada’s shot that wasn’t a goal; theirs was. We congratulate our opponents, I loved how they played. We will prepare for whoever we face.”
