Now that the Pittsburgh Steelers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers have agreed on a contract, the only thing left to sort out are the numbers. FIrst, how much will Pittsburgh pay Rodgers for his services in 2025. And second, and perhaps just as important is what jersey number Rodgers plans to wear.
Rodgers has worn two numbers during his NFL career. He has worn No. 8, the number he wore when he played college football at Cal. And he's worn No. 12 for the bulk of his career when he was with the Green Bay Packers. Rodgers also briefly wore No. 4 when he was in junior college.
There could be a problem if Rodgers wants to go back to the number he had when he was in Green Bay. No. 12 holds very special significance with the Steelers franchise as it was the number of iconic Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw. And while the team has never officially retired the number, no player has worn that number since Bradshaw retired in 1983. Would the Steelers be willing to break more than 40 years of tradition for Rodgers?
The easier solution is for Rodgers to wear No. 8. This is currently being worn by punter Corliss Waitman. Waitman is a long shot to make the roster thanks to the healthy return of Cameron Johnston, so he might be wise to take a nice check from Rodgers and give up the number if that's what Rodgers wants.
