Cincinnati Bengals superstar pass rusher Trey Hendrickson is officially holding out from training camp. The Bengals, like most teams, reported to camp on Tuesday. Hendrickson decided to stay away, leaving the state of Ohio for Jacksonville, Florida. The two sides are at an impasse over guaranteed money, per reports.
If the Bengals can't satisfy Hendrickson, trading him is the alternative. Should the New York Jets have interest in the former FAU standout, who led the NFL in sacks last season with 17.5 takedowns? He's been among the premier pass rushers in the NFL. Hendrickson has recorded a haunting 35 sacks over the previous two campaigns.
The Jets have question marks at EDGE. Third-year pro Will McDonald IV is attempting to build on a sophomore breakout season that saw him amass 10.5 sacks in 2024. Meanwhile Jermaine Johnson II is beginning camp on the PUP after suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 2 last year. The Jets have little depth there, with Micheal Clemons and fifth-round rookie Tyler Baron being relied on to provide quality rotational snaps.
Hendrickson would immediately become the Jets' best pass rusher, but their timelines ultimately don't align. Jets GM Darren Mougey remains in the early stages of what could be a lengthy roster rebuild. Meanwhile Hendrickson is a soon-to-be-31-year-old pass rusher looking for an extremely lucrative long-term deal. Mougey has the money and capital to make it work, but it wouldn't make sense for a multi-year project.
