Scottie Scheffler Joins Tiger Woods in PGA Tour History With Win at BMW Championship originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Week after week, Scottie Scheffler finds ways to captivate the golfing world and do things that we haven't seen in a long time, if ever before.
On Sunday, it was an 81-foot chip-in birdie on the 71st hole of the BMW Championship to take a two-stroke lead and the eventual victory over Robert MacIntyre, Scheffler's fifth PGA Tour win of the season.
With the victory, Scheffler officially made history, becoming only the second player in tour history to win five events in a single season, two years in a row. The other player to do that before?
None other than Eldrick 'Tiger' Woods, himself.
In the history of the PGA Tour, the fact that there are only two people to ever have won five events in consecutive years shows just how incredible of a feat it really is. Nothing can take away from that record.
However, it is fair to look at what Woods did back in the day and realize that Scheffler still has some catching up to do. While Scheffler has now won five events in the 2024 and 2025 season, but what Woods did was remarkable.
He won five events in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2006.
It's stats like that which make you wonder what things would have been like if social media were around when Tiger was at the peak of his powers.
Of course, Scheffler is in his prime right now, and there's no reason to believe that he can't keep this run of dominance going into the future. At this point, it would be a safe bet to think that he could win at least five times on the PGA Tour next year and the year after that. Since Woods, there has not been another golfer as dominant or transcendent as Scheffler, so nobody can blame you for dreaming of what's possible.
Even before the victory on Sunday at the BMW Championship, Scheffler had already earned his spot in next week’s Tour Championship as one of the top 30 players on the tour. Now he goes into that tournament with high expectations, though, looking to become the first player in the 19-year history of the championship to win back-to-back years.
The Tour Championship will take place at East Lake Country Club, and will be the final event of the PGA Tour season. With a $40 million purse, it will be the top-paying tournament in professional golf.
