San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has greatly enjoyed having a future Hall of Famer in Trent Williams block for him at left tackle.

Williams has equally enjoyed working with Purdy, whom he has protected for three of his five seasons in the Bay Area with their most memorable season ending in a Super Bowl berth.

While they've relished this success together now, it's worth remembering that their NFL careers faced wildly different upbringings.

Williams was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. After becoming one of the best left tackles in football and earning numerous All-Pro honors, the Oklahoma product has spent years among the highest-paid players at his position.

Conversely, Purdy - who was 10 years old when Williams got drafted - began his career as one of the cheapest at his position. The Iowa State alum was the very last pick (No. 262) in the seventh round of the 2022 Draft, but he's just now getting his due financially.

Purdy became the seventh highest-paid player in football this offseason, signing a contract with the 49ers worth $265 million overall that averages $53 million per year.

His blindside protector is extremely proud of Purdy's journey to get to this point.

"But for me, it's super, super fulfilling just to watch a guy like Brock," Williams said to reporters at Tuesday's mandatory minicamp.

"You talk about a Cinderella story, I think this is the epitome of that—a guy going from making a few hundred thousand a year to making $50 million a year, it's astronomical.

"It couldn't have happened to a better guy," he added. "He is the guy for this team. He is the guy for this franchise. This is just the tip of the iceberg. He's going to get another contract. He's going to win a lot of football games. He's that good of a player. So, super, super happy to see that happen for him. I love him like a brother."

Purdy's contract now doubles what Williams makes annually - a modest $27 million.

"Trust me, he's one of the richest people I've ever met in person," Williams said.

This may also be an astronomical realization for Williams, but they're reminded to not let these figures get in the way of the ultimate mission of winning football games.

After some injury scares for both of them last season, Williams and Purdy enter the final days of mandatory minicamp in good health as they prepare for their fourth season together in San Francisco with dreams of another deep playoff run.
