Aug. 28 (after the Tennessee preseason game and 2 days before Denver). Roster cut is typically 10 dudes - to get from 90 to 80. (Most teams can make these early cuts in their sleep - i.e. there are typically 10+ players who will "cut themselves").
The "main massacre" (i.e. Great Purge) is Sept. 2 (when we have to go from 80 players down to 53).
On or right after Sept. 2 is when practice squads are set up and teams scavange for late cuts from other teams. All of this typically means that a few "survivors" from The Great Purge get cut after 9/2 in order to make room for new pickups.
