I thought I read somewhere (don't remember where) yesterday that there were only 3 players from Keim's time that were still on the team. Can't remember if it was on here, another site or an article . I know I read it, I think just can't relent where. SMH
It was from the broadcast. Murray, McBride, and somebody else. Baker? Thompson?

SMH. I guess I only remembered part of what was said. 3 players from his last 3 draft classes, not 3 total from all his years drafting. Thx, for correcting and clarifying what I wrote.

5 that he drafted.

Kyler, Trey, Jalen, Collins and Budda

5 signed and all since re-signed.

Dortch, Beachum, Hernandez, Brewer, and Conner

Kyler and Jalen are the only contracts left from Kiem.

My initial 53 would be this (Nichols, Hernandez, Nolan and Beej remain on PUP for now)

QB: Murray, Brissett
RB: Conner, Benson, Demercado, Dallas
WR: Marv, Wilson, Jones, Dortch, Fehoko
TE: Trey, Reiman, Higgins, Deguara
OL: Adams, Beachum, Johnson, Brown, Fro, Gaines, Williams, Jones, Fryar

DL: Calais, Collier, DRob, Stills, Tomlinson, Mustipher, Jones
OLB: Browning, Collins, Sweat, XT, Burch
ILB: ADG, Wilson, Walker, Simon
S: Budda, JT, DTD, Blount
CB: Melton, Williams, Johnson, Jones, Burke, Hall

STs: Ryland, Gillikin, Brewer

This isn't a hard 53 to put together with Nichols, Hernandez, Nolan and Beej on pup. The only arguments are at the fringe like Deguara or Vokolek, or Blount or Crawford, or Hall or Clark. And ultimately it doesn't matter as whoever doesn't make it will stick on the PS.

Guys like Mustipher and Fryar only make the 53 while other teams settle their rosters and then he'll get kicked to the PS when Nolan and Hernandez are healthy.

Nichols and Jones should be heavily shopped. I'd expect one of Browning, XT or Beej to be moved on via trade.

It's kinda crazy we have very little clarification on what is going on with so many players. Are they very close to being healthy? Is it waiting until the last minute to see which players are designated to return? Is it just the overall injury plan? This is the list and it is going to have a large impact on the final 53 because many occupy the same position group.

Christian Jones
Will Hernandez
Hayden Conner
Justin Jones
Walter Nolen
Bilal Nichols
BJ Ojulari

5 WRs? I think they will go 6 and lose a RB.

BJ, Nolen, Nicols and Hernandez + 2 other players can be send to PUP with roster exemption.

That keeps them out for 4 games minimum.

The 53 matters much less than it did a few years ago with a 16 man PS and being able to elevate 2 players per week, protect 4 players from signing and being able to have vets.

It's changed how cut day works, with teams looking at which players might get claimed on waivers if they release them, even though they might be in their plans. Someone like Weaver is an easy PS stash that you can still use. What are the odds of Weaver being better enough than some other teams WR5 or WR6 to make them dump a guy that knows their system and has some rapport with their QB for a guy with a handful of NFL snaps that doesn't know the scheme? Not great I'd think.

On the flip side XT might not be in their plans, but an edge with 2.5 sacks in 200 snaps last year and 4 sacks in preseason has value in a league starved of pass rushers, and he'd have 6 teams claiming him on waivers. So they will keep him and try get something back for him if that's the case.

It's a very soft 53 nowadays. It's more like a 60 man squad, and it takes a bit of strategizing to keep the 6 guys from 54 through 60 that you want to stay from going elsewhere.

No doubt some of these could come off PUP if needed, but it gives teams flexibility on cut day to stash some players that would otherwise make the 53 while other teams rosters settle and they can move some players out to the PS with less chance of claims, or trade a guy that has value.

Would not be surprised to see a number of these come off PUP in the next week after the dust has settled.

CANNOT. It's either off PUP by tomorrow or after Week 4

You're right, my bad. I think they might all stay on in that case. They have depth on the DL and Edge, and they like Adams at Guard. Don't see anyone there they will be rushing to bring off. Nolan is the obvious one people want to see but I don't think they will be in any rush, but if any come off I think Nolan.

I agree. 7 players currently on PUP. Roster exemption available for BJ, Nolan, Nicols and Hernandez. 2 more exemptions available for Connor, 2x Jones.

I'm guessing Connor goes to IR. Done - red shirted.
Nolan could get activated is healthy.

That makes it possible to add 6 players to the 53 that most likely would not have made the team otherwise.

Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols...BOTH out with injuries AGAIN!!!

I need to con my way into a contract as a Redbirds D Lineman....its the easiest job in the world. sign the deal, hit a couple practices...then get put on the injured list and collect your paycheck while binging vintage police procedurals on netflix for the rest of the year.

That last part was a gross exaggeration based of the extremes on this board at time, which goes both ways. But I bet $5, one poster would complain. Now, lets get there so we can see who is right? Deal? If you want to make that as an actual bet, I will even give you one name.

I stand by the rest of my post. Day 3 picks are crap shoots and the numbers of this do not lie.
Considering we may all be dead by the time that happens, I don’t see any reason to make a bet I won’t remember by next season. But I still think you’re wrong. PM the name!

They didn’t think this last year; why would they think so now? There’s really no one new to push him down/off the depth chart.
protect 4 players from signing

Do you have a source on this? I can’t find confirmation, and it sure seems like this isn’t something the NFLPA would agree to.

What BACH said; if they go into the 53-man cut date on PUP, they’re stuck there.

It’s interesting to look around the league and see teams who are leveraging this designation. Seems like only Houston and Detroit have as many key players on PUP as we do.

Nicols is done for good. Never playing again if a neck injury isn't healed after 10 months. But retiring now means giving up $6M in garantees.
