New Orleans Saints right tackle Taliese Fuaga has missed practice most of this week with a knee injury. Fuaga returned to practice on a limited basis on Friday and was listed as questionable on Friday's injury report for this afternoon's game against the San Francisco 49ers. On Sunday morning, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports that Fuaga is expected to play against San Francisco this afternoon.
Per the Times-Picayune's Matthew Paras, Fuaga has been managing inflammation in his patella tendon. It's the kind of injury which only improves with rest, and the Saints did give him some time off during practice this week. Hopefully it helped.
Fuaga, 23, was the 14th overall choice in Round 1 of the 2024 NFL draft. Primarily a right tackle in college with the Oregon State Beavers, he was a two-time All-Pac-12 and 2023 First Team All-American selection at that position. As a rookie with the Saints, Fuaga was flipped to left tackle. He started all 17 games at that spot, playing 98% of the offensive snaps at a high level.
When New Orleans used the ninth overall draft pick of this year's first round on Texas Longhorns left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., Fuaga was moved to right tackle. He exited last week's opening day loss to the Arizona Cardinals with a knee injury after playing 46 snaps. Fuaga was replaced by Asim Richards at right tackle to finish the game. Richards would likely be the replacement for Fuaga against the 49ers.
Taliese Fuaga will make his 19th straight start since entering the league. He'll be needed against a rugged San Francisco defense with standout pass rushers like Nick Bosa, Bryce Huff, Yetur Gross-Matos, and rookie Mykel Williams on the edge.
