Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin looks on during the first half against the Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium. Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports
After coming up short in the coaching search at Houston, Lane Kiffin may have another gig in store.

Kiffin is in talks with Florida Atlantic about becoming the next head coach of the Owls, Football Scoop reported Friday. The AP’s Tim Reynolds also confirmed that FAU is pursuing Kiffin:

Many view taking the Florida Atlantic job as a major step downward for Kiffin, but that might be all that is available to him in the head coaching realm...

Kiffin, 41, wants to become a head coach again, which is something Nick Saban endorses. Kiffin reportedly thought he had the Houston job, but it was given to Major Applewhite instead. Now Kiffin is talking with a program that started in 2001 and has only enjoyed two winning seasons. The Owls just fired Charlie Partridge after consecutive 3-9 seasons.

There are some questions about how much FAU could pay Kiffin, but the current Bama offensive coordinator may be more concerned with the opportunity. If Kiffin can turn the Owls into a winner, it could get the attention of other major programs that are too fearful to take a chance on him...

Florida Atlantic University has a student body in excess of 31,000 students , undergraduate, graduate and Doctorakl students. It is a state system public university.

They have an 850 acre campus which includes an "on campus 30,000 seat stadium with future expansion that will increase to 50,000+.

Construction was completed on the 29,419-seat, open-air FAU Football Stadium in 2011, in time to host the first game on October 15 against Western Kentucky. The stadium has 32 loge boxes and 24 suites, and the skybox and press box allows for a view of the Atlantic Ocean, which is the only stadium in the nation that can claim that. FAU Stadium is also home to the annual FBS Boca Raton Bowl...

I am sure the compensation package will include a lavish home, either waterfront or in one of the local hot poo upscale golf communities. They are ready to open the purse strings for the next head coach. He can be my neighbor.

BTW, the neglected South Florida schools are attracting some high profile coaches. Mark Richt is in his 1st year at the U of Miami. Buitch Davis just signed on at Florida International University. Lane Kiffin would be coming to one of the most fertile recruiting areas for college football.

Update: ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit reported Saturday morning on "College GameDay" that Kiffin had a deal in place with an unidentified school but that talks ultimately broke down. Herbstreit would not reval the school, which was widely reported Friday as Florida Atlantic, nor the reason talks broke down.

This is super bizarre. Imagine Les Miles going to NAU. Its like what?

OK FAU isnt quite as small as NAU but its close enough.

Despite Kiffin being there, I doubt many top talents will want to go to FAU. I think hes going to struggle badly.

Nick Saban did not renew Kiffin's contract. It expires in February 2017. He was a man without a job. They allready hired Steve Sarkisian last year to replace Lane.

BTW, that $$$$ salary figure is low. More like $1.3 million and a cheap buyout on his side of the deal.

Ed Orgeron: Lane Kiffin was headed to LSU as OC before FAU hired him
Ed Orgeron told LSU fans Friday night Lane Kiffin was indeed going be his new OC
The reunion of Ed Orgeron and Lane Kiffin was going to happen, and then FAU came calling with an offer to make Kiffin the next head coach of the Owls.

Kiffin and Orgeron were assistants together on Pete Carroll's USC staff, then reunited at Tennessee when Kiffin was named the Vols' head coach. The two moved together from Tennessee to USC when Kiffin switched jobs, and Orgeron was later named the interim coach for the Trojans in 2013 following Kiffin's early season dismissal.

When Orgeron was named LSU's permanent head coach, it was widely reported that Kiffin was the top target as the team's next offensive coordinator. Kiffin's time with Nick Saban at Alabama had reached a conclusion, and Orgeron said early signs had pointed to Kiffin making the jump from one SEC West rival to another until FAU offered him a job as a head coach.

Lane Kiffin says he likes to inject humor in his program at FAU, and he offers the following example: When he arrived late to a team meeting the other day, he said, "Sorry guys, I was on the phone with Tennessee."
