Alpine, Renault’s Formula 1 team, is bringing AI into the garage to improve decisions on race day. There will be hundreds of sensors on the car that will bring data to help engineers react more quickly during competition.

The team announced in July that AI consulting firm Devoteam would become its official partner. The move put Alpine in a position to tap into machine learning, computer vision, and generative AI as the season hit full stride.

Teams throughout F1 are looking for a leg up on the competition and the push toward AI is part of that. Every lap produces huge amounts of info, from the wear and tear on tires, to breaking patterns, and aerodynamics. Anything that can turn all that data into useful insight during an actual race can make a difference between scoring points and falling behind in the field.

The sensors pick up irregularities in performance as well as trends during competition. Engineers then decide whether to change speed, alter pit timing, or change how they setup the car between sessions.

Results have already been positive for the team. They used similar tools to win narrowly at Fuji in September, the 100th victory in its World Endurance Championship history. This success told the team that live analytics could play a real part in Formula 1, where seconds make all the difference.

“The goal is to enhance strategic decisions using machine learning, generative AI, and computer vision,” said Stanislas de Bentzmann, CEO and co-founder of Devoteam. “Our advanced AI driven decision support tools will ultimately help Alpine to act smarter and faster.”

For Alpine VP Bruno Famin, the collaboration is about using technology to meet their lofty goals. “Their expertise in AI perfectly complements our pursuit of excellence on the track,” he said. “This is about sharpening every move we make.”

Simulations have long been popular among Formula 1 teams looking for better speed and flexibility, but AI may be taking that to a new level. If Alpine can climb the standings successfully, it hopes that by using machine learning it will stay ahead of its rivals.
