My girlfriend's new laptop keeps crashing since we got DSL last weekend. I thought I had narrowed the problem down to the browser that comes with SBCDSL, but then it crashed under explorer yesterday.

Basically you get a message saying this computer is shutting down in 30 seconds, it says something about the NT/authority, and that it is a remote procedure call error(?) and it counts down to 0 and goes off and back on.

I did all the windows updates, we have a virus software that came with the DSL. I did a bunch of updates off Microsoft's website, she has XP for home that came with the laptop, and then I added XP for small office to give her word and excel etc, it's a fully legal paid for copy and registered with Microsoft so it shouldn't be related to that.

Any ideas?

I think I found my own answer, it's apparently the blaster worm virus, which is about 6 months old and must have been on the computer when I bought it near as I can guess. So I'll be downloading a patch and a fix tonight when I get home.
