This is the third season that the Arizona Cardinals are honoring former player Pat Tillman with the Scout Team Player of the Week award, in which the recipient wears Tillman’s No. 40 jersey in practice the following week.

Center/guard Jon Gaines II wore the jersey in preparation for the Week 2 game against the Carolina Panthers, while defensive lineman Anthony Goodlow wore it during practices for the game against the Carolina Panthers in Week 2.

Monday, in a bonus practice after last Thursday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, running back Michael Carter donned the No. 40 and will enjoy an extra day with it this week. The timing was just right because Carter was signed to the active roster from the practice squad on Monday. He had been elevated from the practice squad to the roster for the Seattle game. He also won the award last season in Week 1.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon said the team gave Carter a standing ovation when it was announced that he had been signed and won the Tillman award.

“Mike's an integral part of this team,” Gannon said. “When you've got guys that when their number is called, they perform, they star at their role, they have a good attitude and they’re team-first guys. You can't have enough of those guys around. He's one of them.”

Carter earned the scout team award for his practice work prior to the 49ers game in Week 3, but the jersey-wearing is this week because there wasn’t the usual practice schedule for the game against the Seahawks.

Gannon said, “He was a baller two weeks ago. I love Mike. He loves playing ball, and he does an excellent job for us.”

When defensive lineman Calais Campbell was asked about Carter getting the award, he first said, “The Pat Tillman Scout Team Player of the Week is a really cool thing that didn't exist when I was here the first time. That's new for me, but I think it's a really cool thing that we're doing now with that. First of all, just helps kind of continue the legacy of who Pat Tillman was, what he stood for. I think that's important.

“Inside the building, there's his locker that's in glass that you walk by all the time, and that's cool, too. I remember that being put there, and that was a big deal. But just his legacy is a legacy we should never forget, and young guys should learn about. So, I think this is a cool way to go about teaching guys about who he was and what he represents.”

As for Carter, Campbell said, “He's just a competitor. I always give him a hard time because he went to the University of North Carolina and had amazing games against my (Miami) Hurricanes when he was there. And so I tease him a lot because I told him I didn't like him until I met him, and now I like him a lot.

“I know he's eager for his opportunities to get his touches and have a chance. He's a guy that is just going to continue to get better and work hard and try to put himself in position to get a consistent role.”
