A former top-three NFL draft pick will have a new home in 2025.

Quarterback Trey Lance is signing a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers for this upcoming season, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal is reportedly worth up to $6.2 million for Lance to bolster the Chargers' depth chart.

This marks Lance's third stop since he was taken with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. The San Francisco 49erstraded three first-round picks and a third rounder to the Miami Dolphins in order to move up to select Lance in that year's draft.

He backed up incumbent starter Jimmy Garoppolo as a rookie in 2021. His first regular-season pass was a five-yard touchdown to Trent Sherfield. Lance started two games as a rookie: a 17-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals and a 23-7 win over the Houston Texans.

Lance entered the 2022 season as the 49ers' projected starter, but he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks. Garoppolo's injury later that season opened the door for then-rookie Brock Purdy to start.

San Francisco traded Lance to the Dallas Cowboys late in the 2023 preseason for a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Lance didn't see any action in the 2023 season and was limited as the third-string quarterback in 2024.

Lance is the fourth former first-round pick the Chargers have signed this offseason. The franchise also signed guard Mekhi Becton (No. 11 overall in 2020), running back Najee Harris (No. 24 overall in 2021) and wide receiver Mike Williams (No. 7 overall in 2017).
