Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray will become the team's longest-tenured starting quarterback since the team moved to Arizona in 1988. Carson Palmer was the starter for five seasons. Kurt Warner was with the team five years but was the clear starter only two full seasons. Jake Plummer started six seasons.
This will be Murray's seventh season. He isn't looking for that to change.
“If I could play my whole career here, finish it out here, sign me up,” Murray told Cameron Cox on 12 News Tonight (via Kyle Odegard). “Guys like Kobe (Bryant). Kobe played for one organization his whole career. That’s something I admire, and that’s something I want to do.”
He saw the end of Larry Fitzgerald's career and how the Cardinals legend spent his entire 17-year career in Arizona.
Now, if he wants to be the starter for that long, he will need to help the team win more. The Cardinals have had only one winning season since he entered the league.
“We’ve only played in one playoff game since I got here, which is very frustrating,” Murray said. “I’m more motivated than ever. Going into Year 7 and playing in the playoffs once – I don’t believe that I’m a couch-watching-football type of guy. The fact that I haven’t led us to that, I take a lot on my shoulders to perform in the moments I’m needed the most.”
The Cardinals were in good shape last season. They were 6-4 at the bye and leading the NFC West. After that, they went 2-5 and Murray had eight interceptions in the final seven games to go with nine touchdown passes, an interception percentage of 3.0%, well above his very good career interception percentage of 2.1%.
Coming into the 2025 season, the defense has been improved in free agency and the draft. Murray and the Cardinals believe they should be a playoff team in 2025.
They might need to if Murray is going to remain the guy moving forward.
