Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp were almost inseparable for the last two years. Nacua was like Kupp’s shadow while the two were with the Rams, following in the veteran receiver’s footsteps every chance he got.
They’re no longer teammates after Los Angeles cut Kupp and he signed with the Seattle Seahawks in the offseason, but they’ve remained friends. They even worked out all summer back in Los Angeles, continuing their routine despite no longer being on the same team.
They’ve started to exchange some trash talk over text, too.
Nacua shared some of the barbs they’ve traded during an interview with Andrew Siciliano, mostly about Puka’s speed and a bit about Kupp’s coffee.
“The texts I have between Cooper are honestly about some of the blocking things,” he said. “And he’s like, ‘Man, you’re actually not as fast as I thought.’ The last couple of texts, he’s like, ‘So, yeah. Your 45-yard touchdown. There’s no chance, I know you’re not that fast to run 45 yards and not get caught.’”
Nacua’s response: “I was like, ‘Coop, I’ve been running against you this whole offseason. So either I'm slow or you’re slow. One of those things isn’t adding up.’”
Nacua took a shot at Kupp’s coffee brand, Dodo Coffee Co., for the Hawaiian blend apparently not being up to snuff – even though Puka admits he’s not a coffee drinker.
“I'm not a big coffee guy and somebody said the Hawaiian one wasn’t that good, and I'm like, ‘If you’re going to have a Hawaiian coffee, it better be the best one so you better figure it out,’” he joked.
The Rams have yet to face the Seahawks, so Nacua and Kupp haven’t been on the same field as opponents. But that time will come in Week 11 when Kupp returns to SoFi Stadium, and again in Week 16 when the Rams visit the Seahawks in Seattle.
