Phillies steal Mets' thunder in NL East race with $6.22 million free agent signing

The Philadelphia Phillies won the free agent race for a pitcher wanted by the New York Mets, the New York Yankees and more.

The 40-year old reliever David Robertson has signed with the Phillies. MLB insider Jon Heyman reports he'll be paid $6.22 million the rest of the season ($16 million prorated).

Robertson last pitched in the majors in September for the Rangers. He recently worked out in front of teams to set up a deal for the second half.

Last season, Robertson had a 3.00 ERA in 68 games, striking out 99 batters in just 72 innings.

Over the past three seasons, Robertson has a combined 2.82 ERA.

This is a reunion. Robertson previously pitched for the Phillies among a long team list that also includes the aforementioned Rangers, Mets and Yankees along with the Marlins, Cubs, White Sox and Rays.

This is almost like a trade deadline bullpen pickup for the Phillies.

Philadelphia has needed bullpen help since early in the season when Jose Alvarado was given an 80-game suspension.

Now, Robertson has arrived to put his stamp on the NL East race.
