Assuming that BC and Syracuse get the other nods, that really screws Pitt and VTech on many different levels. I assume Syracuse and BC from a TV market standpoint. This move, if it happens, will end the Big East for all intebnts and purposes. Pitt and VT will have no other alternative but to try and jump to other conferences...of course followed by the rest of the teams in the conference.

Between the Pipes
Temple and Rutgers belong in Div. II football-wise.

I didn't read the whole article, so I won't speculate on the bottom feeders in the ACC getting replaced by some of the top Big East schools, but will throw it out there as a suggestion.

The ACC is now looking like one of the better conferences.

Florida State, NC State, Miami and Virginia are all quality football programs. That's not to mention Maryland, UNC, and Georgia Tech that can also be pretty good.

I doubt that Syracuse or BC would get the other nods, Virginia Tech and Pitt are closer geographically. Virginia Tech is the most natural remaining since all the other schools in the ACC are southern schools.

So what happens to the Big east then? Schools like WV, Pitt, Vtech.? Join Conf USA?

fROM the sounds fo it the ACC would like to have BC and Syracuse for TV reasons.

If Notre Dame didint have such a lucrative tv contract this would be a perfect time for them to join the Big east as a full time member, but I doubt ND would do that since they have it made with NBC and that contract.

Man I really dont like this idea at all!

Its all about TV ratings and Boston and NY are much larger markets than Pittsburgh and Blacksburg

Well, this would actually make the ACC a real football conference, one that FSU could not skate thru to get to the MNC game.

If this were to happen, I could see the Big 10 trying to grab one of the the Big East's teams as well - most likely Pittsburgh, which would be a nice fit with the rest of the league.

But Virginia Tech is a much more supported program than either of those two. Virginia Tech is a big time college football program and better year-in-year-out.

VT would be logical, but would Virginia want them in?

It would be strange, though, to see a NY school in a Southern League - and quite a gap between the current northern most school, Maryland, and Syracuse.

I see your point, but the ACC doEsnt care. They would take Temple if they thought it could boost their ratings (i.e MONEY $$)

I ama follower of Big East football, and just wonder what other teams left behind would do? I garee that the BIG 10 might grab one or two, maybe Pitt or WVU (both have been rumoured in the past) but then what about vtech, rutgers, etc

Geography is irrelevant IMO. TV markets...thus TV money is relevant. BC and Syracuse will bring in more TV. Maybe Pitt but I kind of doubt the ACC would go for them. I could see PItt being picked up by the Big 10. Natural rival for PSU.

Edit: The others would scatter, probably to the Conf USA or maybe even the SEC for Vtech and WV although that might be a stretch. UConn is just starting football in Big East this year so they would be a team maybe completely screwed by all this. Temple and Rutgers would be well to drop to Div 1-AA but I don;t think they are eligible. I could see them in Conf USA though.

BC, OK, but do people in NYC care about Syracuse all that much?

ACC is still a basketball conference...this is about improving the football side but do you think they would turn away the defending National Champs?...in the basketball conference?

Syracuse is still much larger market than Blacksburg Va....I have been there, winked twice, and was in another county. Like someone else said, doesnt mean squat how good you are, its all about TV ratings and Syracuse and BC would pull those over Pitt and VTech.

Pitt, could easily go to the BIG 10 or maybe WVU, but what about VTech? I find it hard to believe they would be in conf USA.

But Virginia Tech doesn't just draw ratings from Blacksburg, that totally is not true. V.Tech has played quite a few national televised games, and have fans all throughout Va.

In Virginia, just like in Arizona, there are two major football schools, Virginia Tech and Virginia, and loyalties are split between the two.

Im not saying Vtech only draws blacksburg. My statement was in regards of Syracuse vs Blacksburg in regards to size. Either way, Syracuse and BC would seem to be the logical choice based on TV ratings.

Hmm...I'm going to get back to you on this one.

I can almost guarantee that V. Tech has better ratings and more nationally televised games. Anyone know a good source for info on these sort of things.

I would say there are cycles to this stuff. When McNabb was in Syracuse, they made national games alot more. VT really came on with Vick although they were in the national stage for some time.

Ratings aren't as important as market size when these decisions come about. Having Miami will mean more emphasis on football but more important is the Miami market coming aboard. The ratings will come from all over but is the Syracuse market bigger or smaller than the Blacksburg market?

I guess this settles what schools would leave

Miami, Syracuse, BC discussing ACC move
By Steve Wieberg, USA TODAY
Miami (Fla.) officials are expected to decide in the next two weeks whether to start negotiating a possible move to the Atlantic Coast Conference in concert with Big East co-members Syracuse and Boston College.
The three schools will act jointly, according to a person familiar with discussions between the institutions and the two affected leagues. That person laid out two options, either of which would alter the Eastern landscape of big-time college athletics. The three schools could:

Leave the Big East for the ACC, which has coveted football power Miami but also would take Syracuse and Boston College — expanding from nine schools to 12 — to get the Hurricanes. Miami doesn't care to abandon a large alumni faction in the Northeast.
Stay in a reconstituted Big East, or a new league of former Big East members in which all schools play big-time football. That would mean a break from non-major football-playing members Georgetown, St. John's, Villanova, Providence and Seton Hall.
The Big East's major football-playing schools already are exploring that step, in part to keep Miami in the fold. "It's an effort, not specifically to improve Miami's position, but to see if we can improve everyone's position. Call it strategic planning," said Syracuse athletics director Jake Crouthamel. "We would be remiss if we didn't consider all the options."

More pointedly, Crouthamel noted, "The Big East cannot survive as a BCS (Bowl Championship Series) conference without Miami." Still, he said, it's possible the Big East would remain intact.

The ACC has approached Miami informally about membership but made no offer, awaiting a signal that the school is interested in formal talks. Among financial and other considerations: a Big East exit fee of $1 million and an ACC entry fee of $3 million, as well as whether the ACC would be more lucrative

Syracuse has natural media-edge because (a) a lot of folks in NYC are alumni (good for the ratings) and (b) their Communications School is highly rated, with a lot of sports media decision-makers and on-air talent throughout the country having gone there.
