McLaren crushed their rivals in Miami, securing a dominant one-two as Oscar Piastri led Lando Norris home, the pair of them over 30 seconds in front of third-placed George Russell.
But Norris, who had started second behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, will feel frustrated after losing position when challenging the Dutchman for the lead at the start. Norris dropped down to sixth and had to fight back from there.
It was a third win in a row for Piastri, who extended his lead over Norris at the top of the standings to 16 points.
The race featured three safety car periods and some very testy behaviour over at Ferrari, where Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc fought each other for seventh place.
Both of them demanded that the other move aside at certain periods of the race. Leclerc eventually took seventh but it is likely to be an awkward debrief.

The thoughts of George Russell, who finished third
“I am really happy to come away with P3. I have been struggling this weekend personally and always on the backfoot.
“Ultimately when it mattered I got a really good result. Well done to the McLarens. They are just down the road.”
On holding off Max Verstappen:
“I was pretty calm. I felt really good in the car to keep him behind me.
“I think Lando is a bit upset with me because we had a little crash in the Lego race this morning!”
10:42 PM BST
Martin Brundle on Sky Sports
“His [Oscar Piastri] racecraft is good. He has definitely got the edge over [Lando] Norris on racecraft. Norris has a fraction of an edge on pace when he hooks it all up.
“Piastri is getting the job done, getting the moves made, not making mistakes and getting victories.”

Damon Hill on BBC Radio 5 Live
“Lando Norris did a very fine job of closing the gap to Oscar Piastri and getting ahead of Max Verstappen finally as well and also putting some pressure on his team-mate.
“Piastri had it under control by the looks of things the whole way, it was a pretty much faultless performance.”

- Yuki Tsunoda (Red Bull)
Sainz will have to visit the stewards for two separate incidents.

Oscar Piastri wins the Miami Grand Prix
The Australian comes across the line to take a third straight Grand Prix victory to extend his lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship. Norris comes over the line in second to make it a dominant McLaren one-two. McLaren won courtesy of Norris here a year ago and they win again in 2025. They come home well over 30 seconds ahead of anyone else.
Russell takes the final spot on the podium, a couple of seconds clear of Verstappen. Albon takes a very good fifth for Williams.
There is drama at turn 17 as Sainz made a late lunge at Hamilton but cannot get the move done. They did collide as Sainz went for a rather audacious move that was not really there.

10:25 PM BST
Lap 52 of 57
Ferrari have now told Hamilton to swap positions and Leclerc will go back ahead into seventh. They are just over two seconds behind the Mercedes of Antonelli. Well, that was the plan, but Hamilton has not yet given the place up...
10:23 PM BST
Lap 51 of 57
Norris has been constantly gaining on Piastri but he will likely run out of time. Three and a half seconds cover the McLaren duo.
Over 30 seconds behind them Verstappen is still just over a second behind Russell.
10:21 PM BST
Lap 50 of 57
Ferrari have not got their strategy calls right in this race with regards swapping positions. They probably took too long to let Hamilton through and now it feels like the right time to let Leclerc back through.
10:16 PM BST
Lap 47 of 57
Norris has gradually been reducing Piastri’s lead over the last 10 laps and is now within five seconds of his teammate.
Nearly 30 seconds behind that duo Verstappen is within two seconds of Russell.
10:15 PM BST
Lap 46 of 57
Ferrari ordered Leclerc to swap positions to allow Hamilton through but the latter has not pulled away. Will Ferrari swap their drivers back around again?
10:09 PM BST
Lap 42 of 57
Out in front Piastri has a six and a half second advantage of his teammate Norris, who has more than 24 seconds now back to Russell. Verstappen is within two seconds of Russell and Albon is doing a great job for Williams in fifth.

Lap 39 of 57
Lawson has come into the pits and has retired the car. He is the fourth driver out of this race after Doohan, Bearman and Bortoleto.

Not surprised to hear that radio message from Hamilton. I was thinking the same thing about China. He was clearly stewing at the time it was taking the team to order Leclerc aside. “Have a tea break while you’re at it” is not going to win him friends though.
10:02 PM BST

Hamilton, on the mediums, is just behind his teammate Leclerc, on the hards. Hamilton has told his team that he is burning up his tyres behind his teammate and clearly wants the team to tell Leclerc to let him through.

The virtual safety car ends and we have a great battle between former teammates Sainz and Leclerc. The latter thinks of a move into turn 17 but the former holds position. The battle continues to turn one, where Leclerc gets the move done despite going deep. Hamilton is just behind and spots his opportunity to also overtake Sainz. Hamilton nearly got past Leclerc.

We have another virtual safety car as Bortoleto has not got back to the pits as he has stopped down the back straight.

Sad news in the middle of the race. Former driver Jochen Mass, who raced over 100 times in F1 for Surtees, McLaren, ATS, Arrows and March, has passed away at the age of 78. The German won one Grand Prix, in Spain, in 1975. He also won the 24hrs of Le Mans. Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, has issued this statement: “I am deeply saddened to hear the news that my friend Jochen Mass has passed away. He had an incredible life at the heart of our sport and was a wonderful person who embraced life and loved Formula 1. He will be remembered fondly by all those who knew and admired him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very sad time.”

Lap 31 of 57
A great few seconds for Williams. Albon gets past Antonelli, who went too deep into turn one. At the same corner Sainz gets the move done on Leclerc. Albon and Sainz are up to fifth and seventh respectively.
Tsunoda has been given a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
Meanwhile Sauber tell Bortoleto to come in to retire the car.
09:51 PM BST
Lap 30 of 57
Piastri and Norris are both told to come in and McLaren can double stack as there is enough of a gap to bring them in at the same time. Two safe stops for the McLarens, who change onto the hards.
Russell is coming on to change his hards for a set of mediums. It is a slightly slow stop but he comes out ahead of Verstappen just as the virtual safety car ends.
Leclerc also came in and has come back out in seventh.

The virtual safety car is brought out as Bearman has stopped at turn eight. Hamilton comes in to replace his hards with a set of mediums.
09:47 PM BST
Lap 28 of 57
Verstappen gets past Hamilton, who is yet to stop having started on the hards. Verstappen’s teammate Tsunoda has pitted.
The McLarens are yet to pit as are Russell, who started on the hard tyre, and Leclerc.
There is a problem for the Haas of Bearman. Smoke is coming out of the back of his car and it looks like a power unit issue.
09:46 PM BST
Lap 27 of 57
Red Bull do react to Antonelli’s stop by bringing in Verstappen, who also puts on the hard tyre, and he comes back out a few seconds clear of Antonelli. Albon also pits for Williams and only just comes out behind Antonelli.
09:44 PM BST
Lap 26 of 57
Norris is told over his team radio that there could be light rain for a few laps in the near future.
Antonelli is the first of the frontrunners to pit. He comes in from fourth and puts on the hard tyre. He was held as he had to wait for Sainz to come down the pit lane. Will Verstappen and Red Bull react?
09:41 PM BST
Lap 24 of 57
The McLarens are pulling away from the rest. Piastri is just under nine seconds ahead of Norris, who in turn is now over six seconds ahead of Verstappen, who is dropping back quickly. The Mercedes duo of Antonelli and Russell are not far behind Verstappen.
09:39 PM BST
Lap 23 of 57
Hamilton, on the hard tyre, is down in 11th and is involved in a great tussle with Ocon through turns 11 and 12, with both drivers side by side. Hamilton then gets DRS down the back straight and gets the move done into turn 11 for 10th. We have had a few pit stops for a few drivers in the back half.

Lap 11 of 57
Piastri nearly gets a move done into turn one but Verstappen takes the inside line and holds onto the position, just. Piastri then thinks about the move around the outside of turn 11 but Verstappen holds him off again. Behind Norris is making ground as the front two squabble.

This is ridiculous. The stewards have decided that no further investigation is necessary for the incident between Verstappen and Norris on lap one. How can that be the case?
Norris has just pulled off a fantastic move into turn four, which is not a traditional overtaking place. What a move and he is working his way forward.
09:13 PM BST
Lap 6 of 57
Multiple drivers are being told over team radio that heavy rain could hit in 15 to 20 minutes.
09:11 PM BST
Lap 4 of 57
Two moves for the McLarens in quick succession. Piastri has DRS behind Antonelli and gets past before turn 11 to take second. Moments later Norris goes up the inside of Albon into the same corner for fifth place.
09:09 PM BST
Lap 3 of 57
Norris had to take avoiding action at turn two so that there was not a crash and this has to surely be a penalty for Verstappen, who drover Norris off the track.
Doohan made contact with Lawson into turn one, which caused the damage to Doohan’s car that has forced him to retire.
The virtual safety car has ended.

09:05 PM BST
Lap 1 of 57
Verstappen locks up into turn one and goes deep. Norris goes around the outside but the Dutchman forces him off the track. Norris drops four positions but surely Verstappen should be facing a penalty. Further back Doohan has a puncture.

Strategy
We are expecting a one-stop race but that could all change. If rain does come that will change things dramatically and if there is a safety car, which I would suggest there is quite a high chance we see one, that could bring drivers into the pits.

Lando Norris speaking to Sky Sports
Lando Norris has had an encouraging week so far, wining the sprint race and starting second on the grid.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1 about the threat of lightning and what that might mean for McLaren, Norris said: “We have to prepare for the wet and dry. I have confidence in myself and the pace in the car. We have been good all weekend.
“It is a long race, anything can happen. There could be a chance of thunderstorms so there is no point overthinking everything. We will do our homework and prepare as best as we can.
“We have not done any running on slicks on high fuel on long-running conditions, especially because all the tyres are softer than last year so there are still a few question marks for us and everyone, which is exciting. But I still feel confident and the pace has been strong.”
08:21 PM BST
Weather update...
For now the sun’s out at the circuit, but it’s chucking it down on Miami South Beach and forecasters have warned that we could see lightning later, race organisers have issued a statement on what that might entail for the grand prix...
Official F1 guidance stipulates that, “in accordance with local public safety standards” the race “can be suspended due to risk of lightning strike at or around the circuit”.
In that case all cars would return to the pit lane, and “teams will be informed ... that cars must be pushed from the fast lane and returned to the teams’ garages”.
Then we would wait to see how the weather develops. If the skies clear, and “the race director is satisfied it is safe to resume the race”, the restart time and order will be published “no less than 18 minutes prior to the restart”.
Once all cars are arranged in the fast lane or have been given the opportunity to join the back of the queue in the fast lane, the resumption time will be announced.

With lightning potentially hitting the Miami track later, at least we’ve managed to get one race in. The drivers’s parade consisted of one lap in full-scale Lego cars and it was hilarious. Probably more fun than the actual racing.
Lego has sent us a press release informing us that each car was built “by a skilled team of 26 designers, engineers and LEGO builders” took “over 22,000 hours to build in the LEGO Group’s Kladno factory, located in the Czech Republic”, and “at a near 1:1 in scale with Formula 1 cars each big build is made of nearly 400,000 LEGO bricks, weighing 1,000kg and capable of reaching speeds of 20 km/h”.

Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in a full-sized Lego replica F1 car during the drivers’ parade
The snail-like pace led to plenty of jokes from those watching . “Who switched to Formula E?” “Lewis is going to say it was faster than his real car” etc...
With each car carrying both of that team’s drivers, it was interesting to see who pulled rank. Lando Norris drove with Oscar Piastri sitting behind him for instance (“I trust him, I think,” Piastri replied when asked how they had decided that). Lewis Hamilton let Charles Leclerc drive. And so on.
Inevitably, the drivers’ competitive instincts came out. George Russell cut an early corner. McLaren and Alpine had a coming-together at one point. Max Verstappen complained his car was lacking top-end speed. Generally a lot of fun, although they might need to sweep the track now. I fear quite a few Lego bricks are still out there.
07:57 PM BST
Verstappen on pole, but lightning a possibility in Miami
Max Verstappen will start the Miami Grand Prix on pole position after pipping Lando Norris in qualifying yesterday. Fresh from becoming a father for the first time earlier this week, the Dutchman delivered a fine lap to take his third pole position of the season. There was under a tenth of a second that covered the top three of Verstappen, Norris and Kimi Antonelli. Speaking after qualifying, Verstappen was delighted with his pole lap.
“It has been a great qualifying,” Verstappen said. “We improved the car a tiny amount, which helped me rotate it a bit better. Q1, Q2, Q3 improving every run. Trying to find the limit. I had a tiny moment into Turn One trying to find more time there but it is very tricky here with the tyres. It is qualifying, try to correct it and floor it out of the corner.”
Norris, who won the Sprint yesterday, was complimentary of Verstappen’s lap but was content with his own efforts in qualifying yesterday.
“Max did a Max lap once again and I cannot fault him. So in the context of that, and his own weekend, second was not too bad. I am very happy with the end result. Just a shame when you miss out on pole, so that is the only frustrating bit. But I have been trying different things, I have been doing different things with the team to try and work a bit more in this area and things have been taking a step forward. So I am happy. Maybe not quite there yet, but happy with the progress.”
Oscar Piastri, who leads the drivers’ championship, will start fourth with Mercedes’ George Russell one place behind him in fifth. Lewis Hamilton will begin down in 12th. In yesterday’s Sprint, Norris took the victory ahead of his team-mate Piastri, with the pole-sitter for today’s race Verstappen ending up out of the points due to a penalty for an incident in the pit lane.
The weather has been mixed in Miami all weekend with rain around and lightning even a possibility later. Could we see as much drama today as we did yesterday in the Sprint? Let’s hope so! The race gets under way at 9pm BST.
