Notre Dame and Clemson have developed a bit of a football rivalry over the last decade, and that rivalry just jumped up as the Fighting Irish and Tigers announced a new 12-year scheduling agreement.

According to ESPN, the deal will start in 2027 and go through the 2038 season. There were already four games scheduled during this period, but now the budding rivalry becomes an annual occurrence.

The timing is quite interesting, as the ACC is moving into an era where teams get rewarded with more money for higher TV ratings. Playing Notre Dame on an annual basis gives the Tigers a boost. It also gives the Irish another annual rivalry against what is currently one of the top teams in the country. That's especially important as leaders at USC start hinting about the program backing out of its own rivalry against Notre Dame. For the Trojans it's all about avoiding a good team so they can weaken their schedule, while the Tigers are properly embracing the need to build a strong schedule, something Notre Dame has usually tried to do during its history.

Note Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua has stated recently that he has a desire for his football program to play Clemson, Florida State and Miami (Fla.) on a more regular basis. This ensures that at least Clemson is on the schedule on a regular basis.

Notre Dame and Clemson have played eight times in history, with the Tigers currently holding a 5-3 advantage. The first time they played was back in 1977 and 1979, and the two split those two games, with the Irish winning in 1977 (21-17) and Clemson winning in 1979 (16-10).

The next matchup came in 2015 with Notre Dame traveling down to Clemson. The Tigers won the game 24-22 as a last second two-point conversion attempt for Notre Dame fell short of the goal line. Clemson beat the Irish again in 2018 in the College Football Playoff. Notre Dame beat the No. 1 ranked Tigers 47-40 in an epic matchup in 2020, but Clemson got payback with a 34-10 win that December in the ACC Championship game. Notre Dame dominated Clemson 35-14 in a 2022 victory but the Tigers got payback in a 31-23 game in 2023.

The first game of this new series will bu on Nov. 13 and will be a road game for the Irish.
