Kyler Murray will not participate in the Arizona Cardinals' first practice ahead of Week 6, on Wednesday, Oct. 8, head coach Jonathan Gannon said.

Murray is still dealing with a foot injury that he suffered in the Cardinals’ Week 5 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Gannon said that the Cardinals are taking Murray’s injury “day by day.” He declined to provide further detail, adding only, “If he's healthy enough to play, he'll play.”

The Cardinals travel to Indianapolis to face the Colts for their Week 6 game on Oct. 12.

While it’s not clear when Murray suffered his injury, he remained in the game, but then briefly went to the locker room for evaluation after a Cardinals fumble ceded possession to the Titans early in the third quarter. He missed the first two offensive snaps of the ensuing drive before returning to the game.

Offensive coordinator Drew Petzing said Murray’s injury played into his thinking down the stretch.

“It didn't have a huge effect on (playcalling),” Petzing said. “But there's definitely things on the call sheet that you're saying, 'All right, we've gotta kinda backburner that' or, 'We've gotta stay away from that.'

"That's definitely part of when a guy's dealing with something like that.”

If Murray misses Week 6, it would be his first time missing a game since he returned from his torn ACL in 2023. The Cardinals would turn to backup Jacoby Brissett, whom they signed to a two-year, $12.5 million contract this offseason — a move made specifically with this possibility in mind.

“He's a true pro,” Gannon said. “... The quarterback position's the hardest position in sports and to know that you're one play away from your role changing, you really do gotta be on the details, like you're the starter.

"He loves to practice, he loves to prepare, he loves to play.”

Brissett has started 53 games in his 10-year NFL career, including five last season with the New England Patriots. He finished that year with 95 completions on 161 attempts for 826 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Unlike Murray, Brissett is not much of a runner, with just 2.8 rush attempts per game in his career, compared with Murray’s 6.1 career attempts per game.

Darius Robinson remains out

Defensive lineman Darius Robinson will also miss practice, Gannon said, as he continues to recover from a pectoral muscle injury suffered in Week 4.

Cornerback Max Melton and left guard Evan Brown will participate in practice after missing Week 5 with hamstring injuries. Kei'Trel Clark and Jon Gaines II struggled in place of Melton and Brown, respectively, against the Titans, so the Cardinals will be aiming to get both starters back for Week 6 — although Clark had performed well earlier in the year when called upon as an injury replacement.
