Every Monday, the Associated Press releases its Top 25 poll, and there are movers and shakers across the country. Unfortunately for North Carolina, the Tar Heels stood still.
UNC remained at No. 12 in this week’s AP poll, the same spot it held a week ago. Despite picking up wins over USC Upstate and a solid Ohio State team with NCAA Tournament potential, the Tar Heels did not climb.
While no teams fell out of the top 10, Vanderbilt (12-0) jumped North Carolina, climbing from No. 13 to No. 11 after staying unbeaten and routing Wake Forest 98-67 on Saturday.
The only teams ahead of UNC that dropped in the rankings were ACC rivals Duke and Louisville. Duke was the only top-10 team to fall, sliding from No. 3 to No. 6 after an 82-81 loss to then-No. 19 Texas Tech. Louisville dropped from No. 11 to No. 16 following an 83-62 loss to then-No. 20 Tennessee on Dec. 16.
North Carolina faces East Carolina on Monday at 7 p.m., then takes a weeklong break before opening ACC play on Dec. 29. The Tar Heels host Florida State before heading to Dallas to face SMU in their first conference road game.
