but the demise of this team started in the 1st quarter of a home pre-season game againt the Tennesee Titans in August 1999, when one ex-Card named Mike Jones decided to make a wish with Jake' thumb. I was there and saw Jake come out of the game one play later.
Coming off the '98 playoff team that injury ruined the '99 and '00 seasons with poor QB play resulting from that much more serious injury(try holding a football much less throwing a decent spiral more than 10 yards down field with a severely sprained thumb) then anyone realized. It set Jake back tremendously and know one has aver given it much credence. For comparison look at what happenned to all-pro Kurt Warner after his pinky was shattered.
In 01 and 02, Jake began to get back to form (18Td-14INT with a 7-9 record) but o-line and WR injuries than negated Jake's ability to play better. The entire suite of circumstances combined to work to the Cards disadvantage. It was just a string of bad luck followed by more bad luck, but i'm convinced it all started with that meaninless QB scramble inside our own 5-yard line.
