Former Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., who visited several teams over the last week, including the Green Bay Packers, is headed to Pittsburgh to join Mike Tomlin and the leaders in the AFC North. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Samuel Jr. is signing with the practice squad of the Steelers on Tuesday.
The Packers had Samuel Jr. in Green Bay for a visit on Thursday. The free agent cornerback also visited with the Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers, and he was scheduled to visit the Chicago Bears before picking the Steelers.
Samuel Jr. had a spinal fusion this offseason and was only recently cleared for football activities.
It's possible the medicals are still concerning for teams, especially considering Samuel Jr. settled for a practice squad spot in Pittsburgh.
Samuel was a second-round pick of the Chargers in 2021. His rookie deal expired after playing in only four games last season.
The Packers have depth and talent issues at cornerback, where Nate Hobbs is dealing with a knee injury and the backups behind the top three on the perimeter are converted receiver Bo Melton and second-year corner Kamal Hadden.
However, Carrington Valentine and Keisean Nixon look entrenched as starters on the perimeter for Jeff Hafley's defense, possibly preventing a clear path for Samuel Jr. to get on the field during the 2025 season.
The Steelers are dealing with injury issues at cornerback, where both Darius Slay and Joey Porter Jr. were shaken up during Sunday night's loss to the Chargers.
