Washington general manager Adam Peters knew his hands were full when he took the job in January 2024. Fortunately, Peters knew he had the No. 2 overall pick in an excellent quarterback class. Washington chose quarterback Jayden Daniels in the 2024 NFL draft and would go on to have the franchise's best season in 33 years.
While Daniels was outstanding — and he had plenty of help — Peters did a terrific job of using short-term contracts to rebuild Washington's roster after four horrible years of drafting under former coach/GM Ron Rivera.
Amazingly, the Commanders made it to the NFL's "Final Four" last season, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC championship game. The final score was a blowout, but the score didn't tell the entire story. This remained a game into the second half despite several Washington mistakes. Still, the game showed that the Commanders' roster was far behind Philadelphia's.
Daniels and head coach Dan Quinn received plenty of credit for last season's success, and rightfully so. But Peters should be praised, too. Almost every one of his moves worked out to a degree. Peters faced a difficult challenge this offseason: close the gap between his roster and Philly's roster. That meant trading draft picks for former Pro Bowlers Laremy Tunsil and Deebo Samuel.
There's no question that Peters has improved the Commanders' roster. But how much? We likely won't know that answer until the games begin in September. But NFL.com recently ranked the league's top 10 rosters for 2025, and the Commanders missed the cut, while the Eagles ranked No. 1.
So, here's a question: Why are the Commanders consistently ranked in everyone's top 10 of their power rankings for next season without a top-10 roster? The answer is simple: Jayden Daniels.
Washington is a serious Super Bowl contender in 2025. The Commanders have an improved roster, outstanding coaching, and, most importantly, a franchise quarterback. Daniels led Washington in rushing last season, too. The Commanders plan to change that in 2025. While they will take advantage of Daniels' skills as a runner, they'd prefer others to lead the team in rushing.
It's a foreign concept for Washington fans to see the Commanders ranked inside the top 10 of power rankings before a season. Thanks to Jayden Daniels, that should become the new norm. And having Daniels around gives Peters more time to rebuild Washington's roster while, again thanks to Daniels, the Commanders remain a competitive playoff squad.
The ultimate takeaway here: the Commanders have an elite quarterback.
