Brooklyn Nets center Nic Claxton is coming off a solid 2024-25 season in which he anchored the middle for a Nets team that struggled during the first season of the current rebuild. Claxton came into the season fresh off signing a four-year, $97 million contract in free-agency to return to Brooklyn and while his payday was well-deserved, the season did not go as planned for him.
Claxton, 26, averaged 10.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting 56.3% from the field and 51.3% from the free-throw line as the starting center for the Nets. Claxton was dealing with some lingering effects from a back issue that occurred in the offseason, but he still went on to play 70 games (62 starts) for a Brooklyn team that needed someone in the middle to organize matters.
While Claxton's production was solid compared to the average NBA center, the numbers that he put up did represent a step back in production from what he had put forth for the Nets in the previous two seasons. From 2022 to 2024, Claxton averaged 12.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.3 blocks per game while shooting 66.7% from the floor and 54.5% from the charity stripe.
The 2022-23 season is probably when Claxton played at his best as he dropped 12.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 2.5 blocks per game on a league-leading 70.5% shooting from the field while shooting that he could coexist as the starting center next to Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Claxton played so well in his role that he received some buzz for potentially being a finalist for the Defensive Player of the Year award and ended the season with the ninth-most votes for the award.
Fast forward to after the 2024-25 season and it looks like the Nets still have a solid center in Claxton, but the hope is that whatever back issue he was dealing with during the season does not factor into his play for the 2025-26 campaign and beyond. Claxton still had plenty of great moments for the Nets in the midst of a tough rebuilding season and here are some of those highlights:
