NEW YORK -- Brooklyn Nets forward Haywood Highsmith has not yet played for the Nets this season as he continues to recover from having offseason surgery on his right knee. Highsmith was supposed to be ready to play for Brooklyn towards the beginning of the season, but he suffered a setback that knocked him out until December. He is fortunately progressing in his rehab, though.

"He's in a good place, shows up every day and does his job, is an ultimate pro. Not just about taking care of his body and getting his work," Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez said prior to Thursday's game against the Miami Heat. On Oct. 19, Brooklyn announced that Highsmith suffered a setback in his rehab and would be reevaluated in eight weeks, putting him to be updated around the middle of December.

"Right now, he's on the court with coaches. He hasn't gotten to five-on-five yet or contact, per se. When he gives taking these next steps, we'll let you guys know," Fernandez continued. "But, he's done a good job. The most important thing to me is his veteran leadership, and how important he is to the rest of the group, especially the young guys."

Highsmith, 29, came to the Nets this offseason via trade from the Miami Heat along with a 2032 second-round pick in exchange for a second-round pick that conveys in 2026. Highsmith, if he is able to play soon, is coming off the best season of his career as he averaged 6.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 45.8% from the field and 38.2% from three-point land last year for the Heat.

The Nets have not given a formal update on Highsmith's medical condition since October, but Fernandez said at practice earlier this week that there would be an update soon. Before that happens, it's nice to know that Highsmith has progressed to the point that he can work out with coaches, even if he isn't able to play with contact at the moment. Brooklyn can use as many available players as possible.
