Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas was knocked out of Wednesday's 112-103 win at the Indiana Pacers with what the team described as left hamstring tightness after he played just six minutes. Brooklyn did not have much to say on the severity of his injury immediately after the game, but it seems that Thomas' injury is worse than what most Nets fans were probably hoping for.
The Nets announced on Friday that Thomas has been diagnosed with a left hamstring strain and that he will be re-evaluated in three to four weeks. As mentioned earlier, Thomas suffered his injury on Wednesday against the Pacers which was Brooklyn's first win of the season after beginning the campaign with a seven-game losing streak before facing the hobbled Indiana squad that was missing eight players.
Thomas, 24, was on his way to having another solid season as a starter for the Nets as he is averaging 21.4 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game while shooting 40.2% from the field and 35.6% from three-point land. Through his first eight games of the year, Thomas scored at least 15 points in six of those games with the other two games being Wednesday against the Pacers and a game against the Houston Rockets where he scored nine points.
This injury has to be worrisome for Thomas and the Nets for a variety of reasons, but the main point is that Thomas will be out for at least the next month. That will force head coach Jordi Fernandez to get creative with the rotation knowing that the team's leading scorer is out of commission for some time, potentially opening the door for Tyrese Martin to be inserted back into the starting lineup.
At the beginning of Wednesday's matchup against the Pacers, Fernandez positioned forward Terance Mann as the starting point guard after Martin was the starter at that spot for the previous two games. But, with Thomas out of the lineup, Fernandez could choose to go with a starting lineup of Martin, Mann, Michael Porter Jr., Noah Clowney, and Nic Claxton for Friday's NBA Cup game against the Detroit Pistons.
