Penn State officially begins its women's volleyball national title defense Friday evening. Penn State takes on South Florida in the first round of this year's NCAA women's volleyball tournament, but the Nittany Lions will have a bit of an uphill battle if they are to bring another national title back to Happy Valley.
Penn State had some ups and downs this season and is a No. 8 seed in this year's bracket. A win against South Florida would likely lead to a showdown with the region's top-seed and host, the Texas Longhorns. Penn State struggled to beat the top teams on its schedule this season, including getting swept each time it faced No. 1 overall Nebraska. But none of that matters now.
Penn State and South Florida have faced each other three times previously will be the first meeting between the two programs since 2015. Penn State is 3-0 all-time against the Bulls wiht victories in 1986, 1988, and 2015. This is the first time the two will face each other in NCAA tournament play.
This is Penn State's 45th consecutive season playing in the NCAA Division 1 Women's Volleyball Tournament, continuing the nation's longest streak as the only program to play in every NCAA tournament.
Penn State has a great history in the first round of the tournament with a 26-0 record in the Round of 64 and a dominating 78-3 advantage in first-round sets.
