Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard suffered a major injury in Sunday's game against the Indiana Pacers, with initial reports indicating he may have torn his Achilles tendon.
As NBA fans noted, there may have been a tragic coincidence in the timing of Lillard's injury.
Lillard went down in the first half of Sunday's Game 4, with the Bucks trying to tie up the series at two wins apiece. NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that there is fear Lillard suffered a torn Achilles, an injury that could potentially keep him out for a year or more.
"Sources: The fear is Bucks star Damian Lillard suffered a left Achilles tear," Haynes wrote in a post on X. "Brutal circumstance after working himself back from a blood clot diagnosis that kept him out over a month."
As many NBA fans quickly pointed out, Lillard suffered a nearly identical injury exactly one year ago in almost the same circumstances. The Bucks and Pacers were matched up in the opening round of the NBA playoffs in 2024, with Lillard going down with a strained Achilles in Game 3 on April 27 -- the same date as Sunday's game.
Many NBA fans took to social media to point out the tragic coincidence and the bad luck Lillard has endured with injuries.
Lillard went on to miss Games 4 and 5 of that series, returning for Game 6 but struggling and he made just 7-of-16 shots from the field including 4-of-12 from behind the 3-point arc. The Bucks lost the series in six games.
It is not clear yet how much time Lillard could miss, though if the initial diagnosis of a torn Achilles is proven true then he may not return until late next season.
