Nashville SC is three wins away from its first-ever trophy.
Nashville hosts D.C. United in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on July 9 at Geodis Park (8 p.m., Paramount+). A win over D.C. would put Nashville in the semifinals of the tournament for the first time since it joined MLS in 2020.
To reach the quarterfinals, Nashville beat USL League One club Chattanooga Red Wolves 1-0 on May 6 and won 3-2 at Orlando City in the round of 16 on May 21. D.C. beat the Charleston Battery of the USL Championship on May 6 and defeated Charlotte FC on penalties on May 21.
Nashville is on a 14-match unbeaten streak dating back to April 19 and has won its past four games, rising to second place in the Eastern Conference and Supporters' Shield race. D.C. has struggled outside of its Open Cup run, however, and sits 13th in the East with one win in its past 10 league games.
Nashville and D.C. have met twice in MLS play this season. The two teams tied 0-0 at Geodis on May 17, and a Sam Surridge penalty-kick goal gave Nashville a 1-0 win at Audi Field on June 28.
Nashville's previous best result in the U.S. Open Cup was reaching the quarterfinals in 2022, where it lost to Orlando on penalties. D.C. United has not been past the quarters since 2013, when it won the competition for the third time in its history.
The winner of the match will face either the Philadelphia Union or New York Red Bulls in the semifinals on Sept. 16.
