So have had like 50 posts harping on how we need a backup veteran qb, backup veteran safety and a defensive tackle who could start next to bryant.. I will lay off how we should trade for dan wilkinson (at least for one thread). Everyone here seems to hate fred smoot...I want him as a backup.

It is getting where fred will not cost much...in fact..maybe a 4th or 5th rounder next year (maybe throw jones into the mix - how much worse is thomas jones than chad morton and trung canidate)? The redskins said a 2nd or 3rd before the draft..but then they drafted a corner in the 2nd round - and they signed alex molton today (I thought we should bring him in)...seems based on these 2 events freds days as a redskin are numbered. If he was on the open market (cut)..he may not sign here..The main problem is that he is supposedly somewhat of a trouble maker and his play has been average. I make following arguments:

1. champ bailey is one of the best in the league..so if smoot is in the game..most pass plays are coming his way.
2. Smoot is small..but not much different size wise than starks. I think fred has a knack for positioning and big plays...he seems to be in the right place usually...but his physical attributes hurt his tackling and ability to hang with larger receivers...
3. Is smoot better than barret or starks..no. Is he better than rhinehart, hill and michael stone..yes - in my opinion.
4. We have developed a team of darn near all supreme character guys...is fred like a david boston who could turn questionable players into bad attitude guys? I do not see his role with the cardinals being prominent enough that he will turn guys into criminals with bad attitudes...
5. If not fred...name another free agent corner who is out there who is better...I would prefer someone..but when I look at all of the lists..the group sucks..and our corners are always injured

sure I will get flamed away...but we have like $5 mil we have to spend..there is not much out there...and our backup corners (who are always forced into tons of playing time) are marginal. I also want a huge dtackle to play next to bryant who will tie up a couple of blockers...to keep people off of our linebackers and ends and allow them to make plays..no one in our dtackle group commands much respect...

also..kffl says that if the rams sign sehorn..kim herring could be cut..personally, I think it makes the rams worse if they cut herring and replace him at safety with seahorn..I would be all over herring for a backup safety spot.

Won't happen because Smoot is not a Mac kind of player. Smoot has talent, but there's a reason the Skins' just signed a new 3rd CB. When a guy has alot of ability and a team wants to dump (particularly the Skins), it's buyer beware.

that is what kffl is saying the rams may do..seems herring has a big cap #...I think the cards should bring herring in for a look see if he is cut..I made a typ in the original..fixed it immediately. Most teams seem to be looking at seahorn as a safety vs. a cornerback.

seems we are not considering smoot and jamir miller because they are not mac kind of guys (although there are other deeper issues with jamir)...I think they would improve the depth on our defense. Jamir is also that tweener kind of guy who can put a hand on the ground and rush the passer or play end (kind of like colvin). moreso since he has gained weight and may play more end...We do not really have a guy like this...also our huge "tie up two guys" tackle in the middle is barron tanner..and that needs an upgrade.

Then we should have signed Molden. Our safeties are passable, but our corner depth is horrible. Given Stark's injury problems, we need to sign one, maybe two corners.... and PAY THEM. In today's football, nickel is darn near a starter on teams.

we kind of payed big dough to starks..and stopped there at corner.. You need 3 good players at dback..especially on the cardinals - dback has historically been our most injured position - outside of aeneas.. Tommy Knight, starks and even chavous were hurt off and on..this past season when barrett was injured..it was awful with he and starks out..

I think they will bring in another corner or two. The fact the team is shopping Stone makes me pretty sure of that.
