It's possessed.

Actully most computers have a "soft" on off button that can get stuck, or have bad contacts (my computer does) only its reversed, I turn it on and it shuts itself off.

There should be a hard power switch in the back that means "I mean SHUT DOWN!

That will solve the problem most likely. Of course it would create some new one as well. :)

Adam, check the BIOS and make sure all the "Wake on LAN"(WOL) is off and disabled. On some computers there are other wake up options make sure they are off. Also a power surge might cause it as well. Do you have a good surge protector or battery backup?

There is an option on some that is something like "power state on return of power" options are off, soft off, always on, etc. If the power cuts out, comes back and this setting is set to ON then the computer would just startup on its own.

It also could be a faulty power supply.

Good Luck

When I had an apartment with my brother we had a possessed sterio in the living room that would turn on for no apparant reason. KInd of spooky untill we realised it had a timer mode and was set to turn on at a specific time. After that it wasn't so spooky anymore.

Thanks.

Well, I've checked alot of the settings, everything seems OK. I hadn't changed anything with it since at least a week ago, so I don't know why it just started doing it. I'm thinking either a bad motherboard or a bad power supply.

I had a stereo in my pool room/garage that would do that. One morning it turned on and the volume was on full blast. Of course I didn't here it, but the neighbors did and called the cops. I answered the door in my underwear wondering what the hell was going on.

I highly doubt its your mobo or p/s. I would check the Wake on LAN feature in your BIOS to ensure its not to switched to on. Do you have an "always on" internet connection? Try disconnecting that when you turn off your system to see if it still turns itself on.
