Alicia Silverstone won everyone over with her portrayal of a Beverly Hills teen, Cher, whose penchant for helping others with their relationships and self-esteem is a cover for her own loneliness. Director Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High) made a smart, funny variation on Jane Austen's novel Emma, sweetly romantic and gently satirical of 90210 social manners. The cast is unbeatable: Dan Hedaya as Cher's rock-solid dad, Wallace Shawn as a geeky teacher, Paul Rudd as the boy who has always been Cher's surrogate brother--and the true holder of her most secret wishes. --Tom Keogh

From The New Yorker
The high school in writer-director Amy Heckerling's first feature, the 1982 "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," was party central; this one is a world of cellular phones, nose jobs, and fast, funny mall-speak, where all the girls love sexy makeovers and all the boys are beautiful young pups. Heckerling's idea was to set "Emma" among Beverly Hills teen-agers, and it's inspired. Alicia Silverstone, an actress with an easy and uncomplicated demeanor (her beauty suggests a warmer Sharon Stone), plays a matchmaking high-school queen named Cher who is so naïvely confident that she doesn't see how manipulative her behavior is; like Jane Austen's heroine, she's spoiled, but her heart is in the right place. With its charming performances, bubble-gum colors, and intentionally funny product placements, the movie is like a kiss in a candy store-silly and sweet. -Bruce Diones

Again, another movie I frickin love.

Paul Rudd :thud:

That and it's incredibly funny.

Cher's Dad: What the hell is that?
Cher: A dress.
Cher's Dad: Says who?
Cher: Calvin Klein.

Another favorite line....

Amber: Ms. Stoeger, my plastic surgeon doesn't want me doing any activity where balls fly at my nose.
Dionne: Well, there goes your social life.

murray: woman, lend me fi' dollas.

dionne: murray, I have asked you repeatedly not to call me "woman".

murray: excuse me, "ms. dionne."

dionne: thank you.

murray: my street slang is an increasingly valid form of expression. most of the feminine pronouns do have mocking, but not necessarily in misogynistic undertones.

Very enjoyable movie. The speech about the “Haitians” was really funny. I don’t see how anyone could not like this movie.

Jenna I just realized you took two of the movies I was going to post for movie a day.

I would hate you for that, but instead I praise you for your incredible taste in great movies.
