MLB's COVID-19 plan involves multiple tests per week; positive result would not suspend play, report says
In the league's plan, a positive coronavirus test would not automatically shut the league down
Major League Baseball and the Players Association are currently in negotiations about a plan to start a modified 2020 season due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The two sides began talks after commissioner Rob Manfred held a Monday conference call with the league's 30 owners, who approved a restart proposal that would have the 2020 regular season begin an abbreviated 82-game schedule in early July.

According to Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal, the league is planning to implement a safety protocol in which all baseball personnel would be tested for coronavirus multiple times a week, with results available within about 24 hours. Diamond outlined more specifics of the plan, including that the league's proposal does not require quarantining players or automatically suspending play if a player tests positive.

MLB believes that it will be able to gain access to the tens of thousands of testing kits required for this plan without taking tests away from the frontline workers or hospitals, Diamond adds. This plan's safety measures are not as intensive as some of the other previously ideas the league had considered, like quarantining all required employees and players. More from Diamond:

Interesting.

So a positive test and they wouldn't quarantine? Me thinks that is a deal breaker for MLBPA.

Christian Walker plays a game. Comes into contact with his teammates, comes into contract with a bunch of opponents, tests positive and...nothing? No big deal?

What am I missing?

According to BC, Walker doesn't have to worry about making contact...

You have a great point. I just don't see how they can do it without a lockdown of the players

Which means locking down the entire team for 2 weeks. 14 forfeits?

It's magical thinking at this point. Testing players a couple of times per week is not going to cut it.

Every player, coach, and team personnel would need to be tested every day before they enter the facility, whether it's a game or practice, and those test results need to be rapidly available (within minutes). This includes team chefs and everybody else that works in the buildings

An outbreak in a locker room could cause a team to lose half of its players for several weeks. What are they going to do about all of those scheduled games? You can't test people a couple of times per week and hope it's not going to make its way into the league. It will.

Agreed. Did MLB consult a single immunologist or virologist when they came up with this plan? Little league stuff.
