Missouri football quarterback and MU baseball right-handed pitcher Sam Horn will take part in the MLB Draft Combine on June 17-21 at Chase Field in Phoenix, according to a list released by Major League Baseball on Friday.

Horn will be among 322 MLB Draft-eligible prospects who attend the combine — a group that includes 180 college athletes and 142 high school prospects.

The 2025 MLB Draft will begin July 13. Horn is currently tabbed as the No. 124-overall prospect on MLB.com’s prospect rankings list.

Although being drafted does not necessarily mean Horn will sign for an organization, the situation still has the potential to make the numbers in Mizzou’s quarterback room relatively thin in the 2025 season.

Horn is currently in a two-horse race to win the starting job for head coach Eli Drinkwitz’s team, competing with Penn State transfer Beau Pribula to quarterback the offense.

The Tigers are light on experience elsewhere.

Four-star true freshman Matt Zollers appears to have impressed the coaches in spring camp, but Drinkwitz made it clear in April that the race for the starting role was between Pribula and Horn. Zollers is coming off a leg injury that ended his senior high school season early, and appears to need some more development before stepping into a playing role.

Drew Pyne, who backed up three-year starter Brady Cook in the 2024 season, transferred to Bowling Green this spring. Mizzou’s only current other options at the position are walk-ons.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound redshirt junior signed for Mizzou as a four-star prospect out of Collins Hill High in Georgia in the Class of 2022, but lost back-to-back quarterback competitions to Cook and featured sparingly and only as a reserve over the course of his first couple seasons in Columbia.

Horn underwent Tommy John surgery after the 2023 campaign and had to sit out all of the 2024 season. He returned to the mound for Kerrick Jackson’s team late in the 2025 campaign, adhering to a tight pitch count over five total appearances.

The righty pitched 10⅔ total innings last season, allowing seven hits, five earned runs and eight walks while striking out 14 batters.

“Horn creates quality extension with his 6-foot-4 frame and athletic delivery, providing deception with a low arm slot and release height,” MLB.com wrote in Horn’s scouting profile.

“He's still refining his control and command after working just 15 innings in three college seasons, but they should become average as he gains more experience. Clubs are trying to weigh his upside versus his lack of track record, and his desire to turn pro in baseball while continuing to compete for Missouri's starting quarterback job complicates matters.”

If Horn is selected in the MLB Draft, he has the choice of whether or not to sign a contract with that organization or return to Missouri.

If he is drafted and does not sign with that organization, Horn would go back into the draft pool for next year and would return for both MU football and baseball in their respective upcoming seasons.
