It's Miller Time! Shortly after informing Texas basketball coach Rodney Terry he was being dismissed, reports began circulating that the Longhorns would hire Xavier coach Sean Miller. Ironically, it was Miller's Musketeers team that knocked Texas out of the NCAA Tournament a few days ago.
Miller is in his second stint at Xavier. After successfully coaching Xavier in the early 2000s, Miller took the job at Arizona, where he coached for 12 years. But Miller and the Wildcats were involved in the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball corruption scandal, and Miller was fired in Tucson.
Miller was 120-47 (.719) in five seasons at Xavier from 2005-09, including Miller's first Elite Eight appearance in 2008 and a Sweet 16 in 2009. In 12 seasons at Arizona , Miller was 302-109 (.735) with Elite Eight appearances in 2011, 2014 and 2015 and Sweet 16 appearances in 2013 and 2017. Miller was 65-40 (.619) in his return to Cincinnati, including a 2023 Sweet 16 appearance that ended with a loss to Terry and Texas.
Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte has been a longtime admirer of Miller's and considered hiring him two years ago when Terry eventually got the job. According to Chip Brown of Horns247, if Xavier had beaten Texas in 2023, Miller would have ended up with the Texas job then.
Miller is described as a tireless worker and recruiter with 20 years coaching experience and eight conference championships (three times at Xavier and five times at Arizona).
Brown says that those who have worked with Miller believe his vibrant personality will re-energize NIL-raising efforts with Longhorn boosters, who have been doubting the direction of the program under Terry.
Miller had four years remaining on his current contract at Xavier, which runs through the 2028-29 season.
