Former Kentucky safety Mike Edwards is now gearing up for year seven in the National Football League at age 29. The Cincinnati (Ohio) Winton Woods product was a third-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2019 NFL Draft who has played for a lot of good teams. The defensive back owns two Super Bowl rings and has played with Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, and Josh Allen. Edwards is on another Super Bowl contender in 2025.
The veteran signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs in April just two years after spending the 2023 season with the AFC West franchise. Edwards was expected to become a rotational safety for defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo after playing 800-plus snaps for Kansas City during his first stint at Arrowhead Stadium.
Unfortunately, the veteran could not get out of the preseason with an injury scare.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid did not provide any details about the seriousness of the injury to Edwards. However, he was not the only player in the secondary to go down as reserve cornerbacks Nazeeh Johnson and Nohl Williams are also battling injuries. Edwards was expected to make the 53-man roster as a reserve safety but this injury might force him to miss some time.
Mike Edwards was released in November last season after playing just three games for the Buffalo Bills before being picked up by the Tennessee Titans. The safety appeared to find a good spot with the Chiefs in the offseason but might not be able to afford to miss much time with an injury. Kansas City is counting on the veteran to provide depth and make an impact on special teams.
The Kentucky product has been one of the most productive pros to play for Mark Stoops. Mike Edwards has eight career interceptions and will likely have a real role with the Chiefs this season as long as this injury does not linger.
