The New York Mets moved to 30-20 on the season with a 5-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, a game that included another hitless outing by prized free agent acquisition Juan Soto.

Soto, who signed a 15-year, $765 million deal this offseason, constituting the largest contract in sports history, had a walk and a run batted in during the game.

Soto's performance was a far cry from what Mets fans expected when he signed his offseason deal, as was his first appearance at the plate during Wednesday's game.

Soto was dropped in the Mets' batting order and responded with a surprising first at-bat that had fans talking on Wednesday.

"Juan Soto, after a long slump, got dropped in the Mets order tonight. His response? Refuses to swing his entire first at bat," reporter John Frascella wrote on X along with a video of the strange occurrence.

Soto appeared on edge as he looked at pitch after pitch. He refused to take a swing and went down on strikes against Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crotchet.

"Going to go down as one of the worst contracts in sports history," a fan said in response to the video.

"I've never seen a player so disappointing in my life," another said.

"I've never seen an at-bat like that," Frascella added.

"The pressure is getting to him," another fan added.

Soto was dropped from second to third in the Mets' batting order, a change manager Carlos Mendoza welcomed.

"It also makes my job a lot easier when I go up to someone like Pete Alonso and say, 'Hey, this is what I am thinking,'" Mendoza said, "and he's like 'I am all up for it.

"With Soto, 'This is what I am thinking,' and he's like, 'Whatever you need, skip.'

"It makes my job a lot easier when I am making these decisions."
